Why are my brakes getting hot?

Your brakes may be getting hot due to a disc brake caliper dragging or sticking. When your disc brake caliper starts to drag or stick then it will cause your brakes to be applied all the time. The disc brake caliper has an internal piston. This will cause your brakes to get hot. Over time it will cause your brake pads to wear prematurely and uneven wear. You may notice that your fuel mileage has gone down as well. It will also cause your fuel mileage to go down. It will also cause damage to other components if it is not repaired. What is DEF Fluid?

DEF is urea that helps clean the exhaust before it's released from your vehicle. DEF stands for diesel exhaust fluid just in case you were wondering. If your vehicle has a DEF system on it, then it's required for the engine to run correctly. If your DEF system fails, then it will put your pickup into limp mode. This is when you will have a lack of power and eventually, your pickup will stop running.   Depending on the manufacturer of your vehicle will depend on the type of DEF fluid that you need. 2012 was the last year that it wasn't federally mandated that you had to have a DEF system on your diesel vehicle. Ford and Chevy both went to the DEF systems before it was mandated, and Dodge switched in 2013. If you have questions give us a call at 541-791-2886 and we would be happy to help. My car has an oil leak, now what?

My car has an oil leak, now what?

When your vehicle has a leak, it needs to be checked. Any type of fluid leak on your vehicle should be examined to prevent a breakdown or damage to the components of your vehicle. An oil leak from your engine could be damaging if not taken care of. Oil lubricates the internal components of your engine making sure everything is working properly. When your engine is low on oil it can cause friction and heat. Can I drive my car with a leaking head gasket?

Can I drive my car with a leaking head gasket? Yes, you can, until you cannot. This depends on if the leak is internal or external. If your leak is internal, it is not advised due to the change of engine damage. The antifreeze will get into your engine oil and then it causes damage to all the internally lubricated parts. This will cause engine failure. If your leak is external, then you can drive it if you keep it full of antifreeze. The engine head gasket will need to be replaced to keep your car running properly. Snow tires or Studded Tires?

The benefit of both is no chains. The studless or snow tires do not damage the road. They do not do as well in ice as a studded tire though. A studded snow tire will cause more road noise when driving. The studless snow tire is made of a softer compound which does wear out quicker. You can expect to get 2 to 3 seasons out of your studless snow tires. The studded tires are a harder compound that allows the studs to be inserted and they will last until your studs fall out – typically around 5 to 6 years. If you are just concerned about having enough traction in the winter, then a studless snow tire is what you want. If you have icy conditions, then a studded tire is the way to go. Either way, you will be safer on your adventures, and you will not have to deal with chains. Does a misfire mean I need a tune up?

Does a misfire mean I need a tune up? A misfire is an indication that something is wrong with your engine. It could mean that your spark plugs are worn out and they are due for replacement. It could also mean that you have a problem with one of your other ignition components. The components on your engine are lasting longer due to new technology, but they still wear out. Depending on the manufacturer of your engine you may need new spark plugs at every 30,000, 60,000 or 90,000 miles. We have seen a few manufacturers that are putting new spark plugs required at every 120,000 miles. For those engines we have found the spark plugs need to be changed before the 120,000-mile mark and are typically failing around the 90,000-mile interval. Your engine can have a misfire due to a faulty ignition coil. If the ignition coil fails, then it will cause a misfire in the engine. It can damage the spark plug as well. Another reason for a misfire is a fouled spark plug. If you have an oil leak on you ... read more

Winter driving essentials

Winter driving essentials Here in Oregon, we have all kinds of weather depending on which part of the state you live in. We have the coast where the weather is mild. Then we have all the mountain ranges. The conditions can be dangerous from time to time with snow and ice. Here in the Willamette Valley, we get a lot of rain and fog. On occasion, we do get a little snow. Our temperatures are typically mild. Usually with a few days of freezing temperatures every winter. When it does snow, it rarely sticks around for long. On the other side of the cascades in the high desert of central Oregon, they have cold winters. Depending on the year, they can get a lot of snow. They do have much colder temperatures than in the Willamette valley. The cold is offset by beautiful blue skies and sunny days. As you continue farther east it continues the same. In southern Oregon, the weather can be cold and wet. They get snow and fog and just a bit of everything.  When you are out, whether you ... read more

Why is my diesel engine losing power?

Why is my diesel engine losing power? Your diesel may be losing power due to a plugged fuel filter. Your fuel filter filters out dirt and debris that is in your fuel tank. It is also a water separator. The debris can come from the filler nozzle when filling your tank. The water in your tank comes from condensation from moisture in the air. Both debris and water are damaging to your fuel system components. This can cause a lack of power, damage to your fuel injectors and your high-pressure fuel pump. It is best practice to change your fuel filter every 15,000 miles. Give us a call and let us take care of you. My headlights are dim can they be fixed?

My headlights are dim can they be fixed? The short answer is yes, they can be fixed. When your headlights get dim it is mostly likely due to the Headlight Lenses getting cloudy. Overtime your Headlight Lenses will become cloudy due to age and oxidation.  This can be fixed by buffing out your Headlight Lenses. To do this we apply a compound to the lenses which removes the oxidation from the lenses that comes from UV light. We then polish the headlight lenses which brings them back to a crystal-clear finish. When this service is performed it will last for several years before it needs to be done again. With winter driving and it getting dark so early it is important that you can see where you are headed. Give us a call and let us take care of you.
