What is a rack and pinion? Your rack and pinion is one of your steering components. Inside the rack and pinon, it has a pinion gear that is round. This connects to the steering column shaft. It also has a rack gear which is flat. The pinion gear stays stationary. It moves the rack gear back and forth as you turn your steering wheel. From there it connects to the tie rods that are connected to the knuckle at your wheel. This allows you to turn your vehicle. Give us a call and let us take care of you. If your steering wheel is stiff while turning then it could be an issue with your power steering pump. If it is low on fluid then it won't have enough fluid to work properly causing the steering issue. It is most likely low due to a leak in your system. We know how frustrating it is when your car doesn't operate the way it should. If you're turning the steering wheel and nothing happens they refer to that has play in the steering wheel. This play is an indication that your steering gear is worn out. Your steering gear has internal gears that over time can wear out causing this extra movement or play. The steering gear can wear out faster if you have larger oversized tires or if it has had a leak then it may not be lubricated properly causing premature wear. Depending upon how badly your pickup is shaking it could be an issue with one of your front end steering and suspension components. When these components get loose and worn out they will have excess movement in them that can cause a death wobble. This is when your pickup starts to shake uncontrollably. This can be a very dangerous situation, it can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and be unable to stop or steer properly. The best thing to do if you find yourself in this situation is to take your foot off the pedal and start slowing down. This should allow you to regain control of your vehicle. We're open and accepting appointments. We hope you're safe and doing well. We are sure you're going stir crazy and can't wait to get out and about again.  If your car is squealing when turning then it could be from a couple of reasons. One would be that your power steering pump is going out, and when that happens your steering may be harder than normal, your car may shake and the pump could squeal when turning due to air getting into the system. Your rack and pinion is your steering gear, it is called a rack and pinion because it uses a flat gear instead of a worm gear.
