What does a turbocharger do?

What does a turbocharger do?

A turbo charger compresses the air and forces it into the engine. When done properly this can dramatically increase the amount of power that a small engine can produce. Smaller engines are often more fuel efficient, this give you the benefit of more power and still having great fuel economy. Along with a turbocharger a few other components are needed to make it as efficient and powerful as possible. Including an intercooler, hoses, and pipes. Rapidly compressed air gets very hot, decreasing the temperature of the air through the intercooler before it goes into the engine increasing density and giving the engine more power. How often should I change my diesel fuel filter?

How often should I change my diesel fuel filter?

We typically recommend that you change your fuel filter every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. If you think you have gotten a bad tank of fuel then we recommend that is changed again to prevent issues with your fuel system. Your fuel filter is sometimes a water separator on certain makes and models. Keeping water out of your fuel system is important. If your fuel is contaminated it can cause your fuel injectors to fail, high-pressure pump failure, low-pressure pump failure, fuel pump failure and possible engine damage. Can I run bio-diesel instead of regular diesel

Can I run bio-diesel instead of regular diesel

Can I run bio-diesel instead of regular diesel This depends on the age of your engine and fuel system. Many of the newer diesels that were made after 2000 do not tolerate bio-diesel. The decreased lubrication caused by bio-diesel fuels can lead to high pressure pump failure, fuel injector failure and possible damage to your engine. Every engine is different and it’s best to ask if it’s right for your engine before using it. Give us a call and let us take care of you. Why does my diesel have a misfire?

Why does my diesel have a misfire?

Your diesel could have a misfire due to a faulty fuel injector. Your fuel injector can fail due to do contaminated or bad fuel. Dirty engine oil on certain models, electrical failure or a mechanical failure of the injector. To know why we need to run tests to determine why you have a misfire and to prevent potential engine damage.  We start with scanning the ECM for diagnostic trouble codes this tells us if the ECM recognizes the issue as a misfire or as an electrical issue. From there we then will either check electrical connections or take a fuel sample. The wiring harnesses for some fuel injectors can come unplugged causing a misfire. The wiring harness can also become damaged due to rubbing or other damage such as rodents. Sometimes this can be repaired, other times it will need to be replaced.    When we take a fuel sample, we check for water contamination and other possible contaminates. To determine if the low-pressure fuel system is working properly, we test to ... read more

Why do I need to have my transmission fluid changed?

The same reason that you need to change your engine oil. Over time the fluid breaks down and stops protecting the transmission. This can cause your transmission to fail. How often is typically answered with a question of the type of vehicle you drive. How you drive and where you drive. That said, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine when it's time for a change. If you drive a manual transmission, it's generally recommended that you change your fluid every 30,000 miles or so. If you have an automatic transmission, the interval is usually a bit longer—somewhere between 30,000 to 60,000.  Even if you fall within these ranges, there are other factors that can affect how often you need to change your fluid, including the way you drive and the conditions in which you drive. If you do a lot of stop-and-go driving you may need to change your fluid more often than someone who drives mostly on highways. Another consideration is if&nbs ... read more

My heater stopped working, why?

Have you ever noticed that your heater does not get hot until your engine is warm? This could be due to a leak within your cooling system. I know that sounds strange, but coolant that flows through your engine to keep it cool also flows through your heater core to warm up the inside of your vehicle. The coolant gets pumped from your radiator into your engine through radiator hoses. From your engine, it makes its way to your heater hoses. The heater hoses take the coolant to your heater core. Another hose takes it back out to your engine and another radiator hose takes it back to the radiator. All of this is happening because of the water pump. If your water pump is not working properly or leaking, then it will cause your heater to not work properly. If you have a coolant leak, then your engine will not have enough coolant to go around and cause your heater to not work properly.   To know for sure why your heater is not working we would need to check it out. There are quite a few ... read more

My car is shaking when I brake. Why?

Why does my car shake when I brake? If your car starts shaking when you brake, it could be a sign of brake problems. There are several things that can cause this issue, and it's important to have your brakes checked out as soon as possible if you're experiencing this problem. In this blog post, we will discuss the different causes of car shaking and what you can do to fix them. When a car is shaking when braking, it's typically caused by one of three things: worn-out pads, warped rotors, or misaligned wheels. Worn-out pads are the most common issue, as they can cause excessive vibration when applied. Warped rotors are another common issue that causes shaking, and this occurs when the rotors become uneven due to excessive heat and wear. Lastly, misaligned wheels can also cause cars to shake when braking, as they can cause the brakes to be applied unevenly or sporadically. The best way to address these issues is by having a professional inspect your bra ... read more

How do I get better fuel mileage?

How do I get better fuel mileage?

We know the prices at the pump are hard to see and we know you are feeling it at the pump, we are too. We have a few tips to assist you with getting the best fuel mileage from your vehicle. Make sure your tires have the correct air pressure. On the off chance that they are short on air, it will cause additional drag. Additional drag means less fuel mileage. Air filter - if your air filter is dirty, it will make your engine work harder, the harder it works the more fuel it uses. Fuel filter - this concerns mostly larger vehicles like pickups and larger SUVs. They have a fuel filter on the frame rail or engine. These need to be changed regularly. If they are not then it will restrict fuel and the engine will have to work harder causes it to use more fuel. Engine oil - your engine oil is one of the most important parts of your vehicle. When your engine oil is older it gets contaminated with fuel due to the ignition cycle. This will also affect your drive train and cause your engine to ... read more

When should I change my engine oil

When should I change my engine oil

This depends on the type of engine oil that your vehicle uses. If your engine uses conventional or synthetic blend oil then it is recommended that you change your oil every 3,000 miles. If your vehicle uses full synthetic oil then you should have your oil changed every 5,000 miles. We know that many manufacturers are pushing oil change intervals to greater lengths. Some are pushing them to as long as 10,000 miles.  The issue with delaying your oil change is that your engine oil starts to break down. Fuel and combustion gases build up in your oil, then your oil gets thin. This means that your engine oil is no longer protecting your engine as it should.  Many vehicles will consume a small amount of oil while driving. Most manufacturers state that your engine may consume up to 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles driven. By extending your oil change you may run the risk of damaging your engine if it were to run out of oil.  Checking your engine oil on a regular basis is a good ... read more
