Anytime that your check engine light is on it means that a sensor did not pass the test that was conducted by the computer. If your check engine light is on and flashing then it means you have a catalyst damaging misfire. This means that your engine has a misfire and it can cause engine damage if not taken care of. This could be due to spark plugs, coil boots, or spark plug wires or ignition coils. After a period of time your headlight lenses can become cloudy causing your headlights to be dim. This can be fixed without replacing your headlight lenses and will increase your night driving visibility. We do this by performing headlight restorations to the lenses on your car. Your fuel filter should be changed every 15,000 miles. This is due to the fact that in Oregon we don't always get the best fuel and many times it has contaminates in it that will cause your engine to run poorly. If you know that you've gotten bad fuel then you should have your fuel filter changed to make sure that all of that contamination is caught before it reaches your engine. Your Subaru could be overheating due to your thermostat not working properly. If your thermostat is not opening when it should then it will could cause your engine to overheat. Your thermostat is designed to open at a specific temperature. When the battery light on your instrument cluster comes on it means that something has gone wrong in your charging system. It could mean that your battery is low or it could be that your alternator is failing. Either way it means that you have limited time until your car will not run. We've had a lot of questions recently about what maintenance should be performed on diesel engines and diesel engines. We will be doing a weekly series specifically for diesels to address concerns and questions. I know it sounds simple and something that can be "put off" but really so important. When you go to long between oil changes then your oil gets dirty and that oil is what goes through your injectors. Dirty oil can clog your injector making it not work properly and even damage it beyond repair. We recommend that you change your engines oil every 5,000 miles to prevent this from occurring. Your engine oil should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles and this depends on the type of oil that your engine takes. If your engine takes a full synthetic or if it's a diesel then we recommend that you have your oil changed every 5,000 miles. If your engine takes a conventional or synthetic blend then we recommend to have it changed every 3,000 miles. If your vehicle is shaking at an idle then there is a good chance that you may have a misfire. A misfire happens when your spark plugs are worn or even damaged.
