Why is my axle seal leaking?

Your axle seal helps keep fluid inside the transmission or differential. That fluid is important because it keeps parts cool and lubricated. The seal also keeps dirt, water, and debris out. Why did my camshaft break?

It's a mechanical failure

Your camshaft is a vital component to your engine. For your camshaft to break it had to have a lot of force that caused the engine to stop suddenly and that sudden stop caused the camshaft to break into three pieces. In this case it was due to the timing belt breaking on a diesel engine. That sudden stop when the timing belt broke caused the camshaft to take the impact.

Once the belt failed, the camshaft and crankshaft were no longer moving in sync. The pistons kept traveling while the valves stopped in the wrong position, creating a violent internal collision. That force was enough to shatter the camshaft into three pieces and cause major damage throughout the valvetrain.

When this kind of failure happens, it is rarely just a broken belt. In most cases, there is also damage to the valves, lifters, rockers, and sometimes even the cylinder head. On a diesel engine, the internal parts are built to handle high compression, but that also means the damage from a sudden timing failure can be severe.

This is why timing belt maintenance is so important. Replacing the belt at the recommended interval can help prevent a catastrophic engine failure like this one. What may seem like a simple maintenance item can end up saving you from a much larger and more expensive repair.

Alternator should not make noise

One of the reasons that your alternator could be making noise due to a failing decoupler pulley bearing. This bearing can cause a variety of different sounds like loud howling, chirping at idle, and even a grinding noise depending on the situation. It can cause the alternator to stop charging and if it seizes then it can break the serpentine belt. If this were to happen then it can potentially cause damage to more components other than just the alternator. It could lead to a lack of power steering turning it into a dangerous safety problem.

Why is my exhaust plugged?

A plugged exhaust is an issue for your engine.

Above is an example of a new exhaust system that is not plugged.

When your exhaust is plugged on any engine it can cause excess back pressure. This back pressure does not allow air to flow properly. It traps exhaust gases instead of letting them flow out properly. This means that your engine has to work harder than it should to do it's job.

When this happens it can have several issues that are hidden due to the plugged exhaust. Typically what we see is that power drops in your engine because the engine is not breathing properly. Then your fuel economy will suffer, this is due to your engine needing to work harder to produce power and it takes more effort to run. The exhaust heat can build up, this an and may damage the turbocharger, the exhaust valves, manifold, or other emissions components. When the exhaust is completely plugged it can cause the engine to run poorly, cause smoking, go into limp mode and possibly stall.

On a diesel, a restriction can also interfere with turbo performance. The turbocharger depends on smooth exhaust flow, so a blockage can reduce boost and make the truck feel slow to respond. If the restriction is tied to the DPF or another emissions part, it can also trigger warning lights and regeneration problems. This can also mask other issues.

Why does my car smell like rotten eggs?

This can cause bigger issues with your engine

This is typically due to an issue with your catalytic converter. When your engine is not burning fuel properly it can cause an excess of fuel to enter your exhaust system. This unburnt fuel can smell like rotten eggs - which is not eggs but sulfur from the fuel.

Another reason would be a lean condition. This would cause excess heat in your exhaust system which can cause the catalytic converter to overheat and the internal material to break or to become damaged.

You can avoid this by making sure your engine is running properly and not ignoring that check engine light. If you do smell sulfur or rotten eggs it's recommended to have your vehicle checked to make sure all of it's systems are functioning as they should.

What does a Mass Air Flow Sensor do?

This could be causing your run-ability issues

Your mass air flow sensor measures the amount of air that in coming into your engine. This measurement determines how much fuel your engine needs to run properly. When this sensor is not reading the air flow properly this can cause either to much fuel or not enough to be delivered into your engine. This can cause what we call a lean or rich fuel condition. Both conditions are detrimental to the run-ability of your engine. They can cause damage to your engine components such as your catalytic converter and if left to long even your pistons and the bearings located in the lower part of your engine. This can also be a possible cause for poor fuel economy.

When should spark plugs be replaced?

They should be replaced on time.

Your spark plugs are on a maintenance schedule. This maintenance schedule is important to keep your engine running smoothly and at it's more efficient. Depending on your engine and the type of spark plug they may be due to be changed anywhere from 30,000 to 90,000 miles.

Driving conditions can influence when your spark plugs need to be replaced. Town or city driving is considered severe driving conditions by most manufacturers. Due to the stop and go nature. This can cause your spark plugs to wear out prematurely and require replacement before normal intervals.

Your ignition components should be inspected during spark plug replacement. These components include ignition coil(s), ignition coil boots, spark plug wires, and if your engine is equipped with it then a distributor cap and rotor.

Regular maintenance of your engine will keep running smoothly and more efficiently It can improve fuel mileage and the longevity of other engine components as well.

What is a brake master cylinder?

A brake fluid leak is very bad.

Your brake master cylinder is part of your braking system. Your brake fluid reservoir is attached to the top of it. What it does is a great question. When you press on the brake pedal the brake master cylinder pressurizes your brake fluid, that fluid flows through your brake lines to your calipers and wheel cylinders. That hydraulic pressure from the fluid is what commands your brake calipers to squeeze your brake pads onto your brake rotor for you to stop. With your wheel cylinders it instead commands your brake shoes to press into your drums to stop your vehicle.

If you brake master cylinder is leaking then it cannot create enough pressure and it can take you longer to stop than anticipated. A leaking brake master cylinder symptoms may include a soft brake pedal, your vehicle taking longer to stop than usual, a leak and brakes that feel different.

Why are my transmission cooler lines leaking?

This is a repair you don't want to put off

All automatic transmissions have a transmission cooler. In most cases there are hoses or lines that from run from your transmission to the transmission cooler. Most transmission coolers are located near the radiator at the front of the vehicle. Your transmission fluid heats up and to prevent damage to your transmission that fluid flows through the transmission lines to the transmission cooler that keeps the fluid at a proper temperature to prevent transmission damage.

These lines are made of rubber and over time they can soften and start to leak where they are crimped. We have also found that if they are rubbing against something this can cause a leak as well. If unattended these leaks can cause transmission damage or failure if the fluid level becomes to low.

When do I replace my brake pads?

Stopping is as important if not more important than starting

We all know how important brakes are, and they should be checked each time that you have your vehicle serviced. Brake pads typically start between 10-12mm of brake pad. This depends on they type of vehicle that you drive. Passenger cars and pickups are usually closer to the 10mm range, and diesel pickups and larger heavier vehicles start at 12mm.

Your brake pads wear from the caliper squeezing the brake pad onto the brake rotor. This is what makes you stop, so each time you brake a little bit of material is worn off. They are designed to for this.

When your brake pads get down to 3-4mm then it's time for them to be replaced. Typically depending on how you drive and the type of material that your brake pads are made of this can be years before you need to worry about replacing your brake pads.

Why is my radiator hose leaking?

Coolant is a vital fluid

Your car’s cooling system is under a massive amount of pressure - literally. While radiator hoses are designed to be tough, they are the most common "weak link" in your cooling system. If you’ve noticed a puddle of neon-colored fluid on your driveway or a sweet, syrupy smell after a drive, your coolant is telling you something, you've got a leak.

Most think hoses only break because they get old. While age is a factor, there are other forces at work. Internally there are tiny particles in old coolant act like sandpaper, wearing down the inside of the hose until it’s paper-thin. We also have the battery effect where electricity flows through your coolant and that electricity weakens the structure of the hoses from the inside. Hoses that are older who are barely hanging on can become swollen.

Remember to never open your radiator while it is hot. The fluid inside is pressurized and is typically 180+ degrees. It will burn you.

Why did my transfer case break?

Catastrophic damage is not normal

While this kind of damage does occur it's not a common to see a transfer case in pieces. Typically for this to occur something needs to break violently internally and the force breaks the case of the transfer case.

In this instance the chain is no longer on the sprocket which leads us to believe that something broke internally and then the chain hit the transfer case with enough force to break it.

Why did my water pump break?

A water pump is a vital component

In this case the water pump outer shaft bearing failed. This caused the serpentine belt to break and the vehicle to lose power steering, at the same time the battery light came on due to the alternator no longer charging the electrical system.

Your water pump is vital to the health of your engine, without it your engine will overheat and you will have bigger issues including potential engine failure. For many engines the water pump is changed every 90,000 with a timing belt. In cases where your engine uses a timing chain the water pump does not get replaced until failure occurs. As preventative maintenance if your water pump is over 100,000 miles old then it's a good idea to have it inspected to check the bearings for noise and the seals for leakage. This can prevent a tow bill and an inconvenience of you not having your vehicle.

Why did my timing belt break?

A little maintenance can prevent a big problem

Not all engines have a time belt, those that do this is great information for you.

Your timing belt is what makes your engine run properly - it is what does it make sure that the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft are correct so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper times.

If your timing is off or the belt breaks it can cause the pistons and the valves to collide and that will cause damage. Your engine will not run and the cylinder head will need to come off the engine to have the valves replaced. This repair can get expensive quickly and this is where a bit of preventative maintenance comes into play.

Most engines need to have the timing belt replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. This depends on the manufacturer. If we are looking at age instead of mileage that means that you need to have your timing belt serviced every 7 years. After that the rubber deteriorates and the belt can break even if you are not ready for it based on mileage.

Many water pumps are driven by the timing belt, this means that it will get replaced at the same time that your timing belt gets taken care of. There are many things that get touched as we go in and out of a timing belt replacement. There are things that should be done at the same time to save you money in labor later.

That growling noise is something to watch for.

There are several reasons why your power steering pump may be making noise and the most common is that your fluid level is low due to a leak in your system. This is typically either a power steering hose, your steering gear/rack and pinion or the pump itself. Many times low fluid levels can damage the power steering pump due to a lack of lubrication. This is why taking care of a seep or slight leak is important before it causes more damage.

How do I keep rodents away from my car?

They can cause a lot of damage

We all know that when the weather gets cold, rodents like mice, rats, and squirrels look for warm, quiet places to hide and nest. Your car or pickup is a perfect place for them. It's sheltered from the weather and inside the dash is a great place to build a nest with your cabin air filter or engine air filter material. They love to hide in blower motors in your dash too.

The problem is that they can cause real damage that leads to warning lights, no-start issues, bad smells, and expensive repairs. If you’ve ever opened your hood and found leaves, shredded paper, or chewed plastic, you’ve seen how quickly it can happen.

How often should I change my wipers?

That streaking can lead to bigger problems

In the Pacific Northwest we see all the seasons, rain, sun, and even some snow now and again. Your wipers work hard all year to keep your windshield clean so you can see where you're headed. Over time those little blades of rubber start to wear out and get hard. This causes streaking and even noise when you turn them on and less visibility for you.

Due to the wide range of seasons that we see we recommend changing your wipers when they need it of course. With that you can expect to change out your wipers around twice a year.

What is my diesel particulate filter light on?

That light is important.

Your diesel particulate filter light or DPF light may come on for a number of reasons. It is a light that should be not be ignored. Ignoring this light can cause more series issues with your emissions and exhaust system.

The light typically comes on when it's time for a regen. Many times your system will do an automatic regen while you are driving. If it has an error then the regen may need to be done manually or forced.

A regen is the self cleaning process that burns off the soot that has accumulated in the diesel particulate filter. It does this by raising the temperate of the exhaust to 1000 to 1200 degrees approximately. This temperature burns out the soot that has accumulated and allows your system to function properly.

If your light has come on and your system will not do a regen then it could be from a number of reasons. Your DPF could have excess soot, it has had to many short trips and low speed driving that has not allowed a regen to happen, excessive idling can cause soot to build up quickly and interrupted regens where you turn off the engine mid regen.

Why is my blower motor making noise?

You want this to work properly.

A blower motor is part of your heating and air conditioning system. This component uses a fan to move the air through your vents. It's an important part of your system. When your blower motor stops working it can cause fogged up windows and poor visibility. Your blower motor can fail due to normal wear, water intrusion and commonly rodent damage and debris.

Similar blowers are used on hybrid and electric vehicles to keep the batteries at the proper operating temperatures.

What is a wheel bearing?

These are vital to keep you safe on the road.

A wheel bearing attaches the wheel hub to the suspension knuckle - in the front - or rear axle - in the rear - this is what allows your wheels carry you down the road.

When your wheel bearing goes bad it could make noise or have excessive movement in the wheel hub. This can make your vehicle less stable and an extreme cases it can damage your brakes or your wheel could fall off. Either way this is not a repair that should be postponed.

What is a fan clutch?

They help keep your engine cool.

A fan clutch is hydraulic coupler that controls your engine's fan. It can engage and disengage the fan from the one of your drive belt pulleys - typically your water pump pulley. As the temperature of your engine increases it engages more firmly which in turn pulls more air through the radiator to cool off your engine. This helps to prevent your engine from overheating.

The great thing about a fan clutch is that is can increase your fuel economy due to the ability to disengage when it's not needed. When you are cruising and your engine is cooler it can disengage. When your engine is under load again it will re-engage when your engine needs to be cooled off to maintain proper operating temperatures.

They are more reliable on certain vehicles than the electrical fan counterpart that many vehicles have now. The mechanical fan that the fan clutch drives provides more air flow which keeps your engine working at optimum temperature. We find most fan clutches on modern vehicles are on diesel pickups and other larger engines.

Why did my turbo fail?

They need maintenance to keep them running.

There are several reasons your turbo may fail. Sometimes a turbo will fail due to age and the internal components wearing out.

One common reason for a turbo to fail is carbon build up. This is typical on the variable geometry turbo. These gets carbon build up/soot build-up from the emission system and or not running properly. This is not something that you need to worry about on the standard turbos.

The next reason a turbo may fail is due to a bearing failure. We find bearings fail when they have had a loss of lubrication aka something has gone wrong with the oil feed tube to the turbo. This can also happen with extending oil changes and dirty oil. This is why it's so important to do oil changes on a consistent basis.

Our last reason that a turbo may fail is due to debris damage. This occurs when an improperly installed air filter allows debris to get past the air filter and then that debris travels to the turbo and damages the wheel and other internal components. Having a clogged air filter can also cause damage due to the turbo not getting enough air flow.

Why should I warm up my car in the morning?

It's better for your engine.

Most modern vehicle engines require less time to warm up than they used to. Now anywhere from 5-10 minutes is plenty of time most mornings. However it can still be beneficial and occasionally necessary to allow a little more time for warm up before driving. That extra time and heat allow your heater to defrost your windshield more thoroughly. Not waiting long enough can make it difficult to see, and driving with poor visibility is certainly more dangerous.

Another benefit can be increased engine life. Many of the metal components in your engine will expand as they warm up, this changes the tolerances and ability to lubricate things like the engine crankshaft bearings, camshaft bearings, and piston to cylinder clearance just to name a few.

Similar benefits can be seen for your transmission as well. While we don't recommend excessive engine idling, we have seen that just a couple of extra minutes and driving a bit more gently until your vehicle is warm can lead to longer engine life and less breakdowns in the long run.

Why do they use leaf springs on trucks?

They are more important than you know.

We typically see leaf springs in the rear of pickups and medium duty trucks. Many manufacturers will install leaf springs on the rear of vehicles that are used for towing or hauling heavier loads. Leaf springs are great because they have a higher weight rating due to the multi-layer construction. They also provide more stability when hauling and towing heavier loads.

Over time leaf springs do wear out. It is typically after many years of use and heavy loads. Indications that you need your leaf springs replaced include your vehicle ride height is lower than normal and possibly lower on one side than the other. Also a feeling of less stability when towing.

What caused my misfire?

A spark plug gap can cause a misfire.

When your engine starts to run poorly and the check engine light comes on there is a good chance that you have an issue with your spark plugs. While there are several reasons why your spark plugs can misfire a enlarged spark plug gap is just one of them.

Now you're probably wondering what a spark plug gap is - well it is the gap between the center of the spark plug and the top. To small of a gap and it will not create enough of a spark and that will not allow the fuel to ignite properly. To large of a gap and the spark may not happen at all causing a misfire.

Modern vehicles often come with factory-set spark plugs, but over time, wear and tear or incorrect installation can throw that gap off. With modern engines relying on precise timing and spark delivery, even a small gap issue can lead to big problems like:

rough idling, poor acceleration, reduced fuel efficiency, your check engine light coming on and more.

If your engine is not running as smoothly as it should this is something that should not be ignored. A misfire can lead to more damage over time, including harm to your catalytic converter or engine components.

What is a ball joint?

Your ball joints are an important component of your suspension system. The ball joint connects your control arms to the steering knuckle. This is what allows the suspension move up and down while allowing the wheels to turn left and right.

When your ball joint is worn out it can cause multiple issues including alignment problems that can cause tire wear and poor handling. In more extreme cases it can cause unstable handling conditions especially on rough roads and ruts. If they become to worn out they can break or come apart causing the suspension to collapse, this can cause damage and possibly a loss of control and an accident.

How often should I change my cabin air filter?

It's more often than you think.

Your cabin air filter is dirtier than you think. The one on the left is about 12,000 miles old. The one on the right is new. The one on the left is no longer filtering the air that you breathe in when you're driving, it's to dirty. If you're still coughing, sneezing, and having allergy like symptoms there is a good chance that your cabin air filter is dirty and you're breathing in that dirty air.

Not only is a dirty cabin air filter not filtering the air properly but it's also making your heating and cooling system work harder than normal do to the restrictions in the filter.

We recommend that your filter be changed every 12,000 to 15,000 miles and if you're in an area where it gets dirty quicker then it should be changed more frequently.

Why does my battery test bad?

Batteries really don't like cold weather

When the temperatures drop, it’s not just your fingers and toes that feel the chill your car battery does too. Cold weather is one of the leading causes of unexpected battery failure.

Car batteries work through chemical reactions. Inside the battery, chemical energy is converted into electrical energy to power your vehicle. But when it’s cold outside, these chemical reactions slow down. The lower the temperature, the harder it is for your battery to produce enough power to start your engine.

On top of that, your engine oil thickens in low temperatures, which means your battery has to work even harder to turn the engine over. So, while your battery is already struggling to perform at full strength, it’s also being asked to do more work than usual.

Why did my transmission fail?

This is why fluid services are so important

The material you see in that pan. The glitter and dark material is from clutch material and steel plates inside of your automatic transmission. It's normal for you to have a slight amount of material from normal wear.

Your automatic transmission has clutches and steel plates that separate each clutch disc. Over time if not properly lubricated and protected those clutches can wear down to quickly and once the friction material is gone you now have metal to metal contact which will cause a transmission to fail. Due to the contamination of other components with the metal particles.

Regular servicing of your transmission filter and fluid can help to prevent a premature transmission failure. When your transmission fluid is dirty or burnt it is not protecting the clutches and other internal components of your transmission. A transmission fluid service should be performed on your transmission every 50,000 miles, if you tow regularly or heavy we recommend every 30,000 miles - or sooner based on the condition of the fluid.

As note some manufactures are not recommending transmission services until 100,000 miles and some say they have lifetime fluid. The problem that we find is that these transmissions are failing much sooner and are more costly.

Why does my engine have a tick

Some ticking is normal, let's talk about the difference.

Newer engines with direct injection have a ticking that is normal from the fuel injectors themselves. This is not something to be concerned about unless the ticking changes suddenly or becomes louder. This could indicate an issue with the engines valve train which includes components such as lifters, timing chains, timing chain tensioners, rocker arms and more.

Ticking can also come from the bottom of your engine and that is not a good thing. That means that a component is either worn out or broken. This noise may start as a tick and grow into a knock.

The picture above is of a camshaft that the lifter failed on. The lifter stuck causing premature wear on the camshaft lobe. This caused a ticking noise. We were not able to catch this failure before it caused severe engine damage. Not only did the camshaft need replaced, but all lifters, rockers, main bearings and other components as well.

We suggest that anytime your engine is making a noise that you have it checked to prevent a bigger issue. Give us a call and let us take care of you.

What does a block heater do?

They help prevent excess engine wear.

It's that time of year when the temperatures start to drop and it takes your engine more effort to start. A block heater helps your engine to start by keeping the coolant warm. They are typically installed in a coolant passage on your engine block. With the coolant being warm it keeps your engine warm and that includes your engine oil. This ensures an easier start and less wear on your internal components and saves on fuel.

This also means that on those cold mornings that your heater starts working more quickly to defrost those windows and keeps you warm too.

Not all vehicles come with a block heater but one can be installed on most engines. As a reminder they do need to be plugged into a wall outlet on your house.

Why did my thermostat stick?

This is why your car isn't warming up properly.

If your car is running cooler than normal, or your heat isn’t working right, you might be dealing with a stuck thermostat. The thermostat in your car isn’t the kind you use to set the temperature in your house. It’s a small part inside your engine that helps regulate temperature by controlling the flow of coolant. When it gets stuck, your engine can’t keep the right temperature and that’s a problem.

When your thermostat gets stuck open, coolant flows through the engine all the time even when it’s not supposed to. This can cause your engine to run too cold, which means it takes longer to warm up. You might notice poor gas mileage or your heater not blowing hot air.

Like most parts in your car, thermostats wear out over time. Corrosion, debris, or just plain age can cause them to stick. If your car is older or hasn’t had the thermostat replaced in a long time, it might be time for a new one. Old or dirty coolant can also affect the thermostat.

If you think your thermostat is stuck, don’t ignore it. Even if your car still runs, it’s not running the way it should and that can cause bigger problems down the line. Why did my harmonic balancer break?

It's an important component.

Let's start with what a harmonic balancer does. Your harmonic balancer absorbs engine vibrations from the crankshaft. It does this because it is made of an inner and outer steel ring with rubber injected between. This absorbs the vibrations from the crankshaft that can cause damage to internal components if the harmonic balancer fails.

Over time this injected rubber deteriorates. This will cause the harmonic balancer to separate and the outer shell may come off. In some cases your harmonic balancer also acts as a serpentine belt pulley. When the harmonic balancer breaks it can cause damage to your belt as well.

This is an item that does not typically wear out frequently. It can wear out prematurely due to oil contamination from an engine oil leak damaging the rubber in the harmonic balancer. It is recommended that you check your balancer for wear damage at each oil change service.

Why do I have an EVAP code?

This requires some testing...

Your evaporative emission control system is both part of your fuel system and your engine control system. It's purpose is to prevent gasoline vapors escaping into the atmosphere. It does this by capturing them from the top of your fuel tank and storing them in a charcoal canister. Your vehicle will then pull the vapors through lines into the engine. The engine uses these vapors to supplement the fuel used by your engine.

When your check engine light comes on for a EVAP code that means that anyone of the components in this system which include multiple valves or lines could have an issue. The way to know which of these components is the issue is to preform a smoke test. This will show which component is leaking and causing your check engine light.

Why did my timing gear fail?

A bit of maintenance can save you.

Hearing that your timing gear has failed is never the call that you want to get. Your timing gear can fail due to extended oil intervals, low engine oil levels and from wear.

Sometimes the fix is as simple as replacing the worn or damaged part. Other times when this component fails it can cause catastrophic engine damage. The easiest way to prevent this damage is to check your engine regularly and have your oil changed at the proper intervals, ie either 3,000 or 5,000 miles.

Why did my cam phaser fail?

This is why an oil change is so important

Let's start with what a camshaft phaser is. A camshaft phaser is normally part of the drive gear that runs on the timing chain. This gives your computer the ability to adjust the physical camshaft timing allowing your engine to produce more efficient power over a much broader engine speeds or RPMs range.

Cam phasers can fail for multiple reasons. Many times failure is due to a lack of good lubrication. Extending your oil change intervals can cause premature wear on these components that rely on oil to function.

You camshaft phaser over time can mechanically wear out. When this happens an oil leak may be happening internally and you will not be able to see it. A symptom of this can be engine rattling on cold starts until the engine has built oil pressure.

Some camshaft phasers have lock pins. The job of these pins are to lock the camshaft timing into a set position during start up. This allows time for the oil pressure to build up. Once the oil pressure is at a safe pressure the pins are released and the computer can now control the camshaft timing using oil control solenoids.

Oil control solenoids can also fail making impossible for the computer to control the camshaft timing. This can lead to a variety of drivability issues and concerns. Including running rough, lack of power and poor overall engine performance.

Why is my pinon seal leaking?

It's not always the seal that's the issue.

Your pinion seal has multiple components that can cause your pinion seal to leak. This pinion yoke had a groove worn just enough to cause a leak even with a new seal. This groove could have been caused by low fluid level in the differential, this increases friction between the seal and the shaft. Over time it can cause a groove to form. Sometimes the yoke needs to be replaced with the seal.

Another thing is worn bearings allowing the pinion shaft to move excessively this will cause increase pressure on one side and allow fluid to leak at the same time. When this occurs a more significant differential repair may be required.

If your differential vent hose is plugged this can cause pressure to build up as the differential gets warm. This pressure can cause seals to leak even when they are in good condition. It is important to check the vent when you are doing any differential service work.

Why do I need a brake fluid service?

It's more important than you think.

Brake fluid is not one of those things that most people think about when we are taking about regular maintenance. Your brake fluid is a vital component in your vehicle stopping properly and when you want it to. Your brake fluid runs your brakes hydraulic system. When you press on the brakes your brake master cylinder sends fluid to your brake caliper or your wheel cylinder to activate and to apply your brakes.

When your brake fluid is dirty it gets contaminated with moisture other wise known as water. That water dilutes your brake fluid and if it becomes to diluted then your brakes will not work properly. In an emergency braking situation it can cause your brake fluid to boil and for your brakes to not work.

If you live in a damp climate then you need to have your brake fluid serviced annually. If you live in a dry climate you can go longer between services. Brake fluid absorbs the moisture in the air around it so when you live somewhere humid or where it rains a lot then those are different factors.

Why is my belt cracked?

Is it age or an issue?

Your serpentine belt is an important component of your engine to keep you rolling down the highway smoothly. This belt typically drives your water pump, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning system. Some systems have one long belt that drives each of these, other systems have individual belts.

As time goes the friction of your belt going over the pullies will cause it to start to wear and harden. This hardening is completely normal and it will cause your belt to crack. The best time to get your belt replaced is when it starts cracking as you have gotten all the of the life out of it and it has not yet left you stranded.

If you belt breaks it can cause your water pump to stop working - this will cause your engine to overheat. You alternator to stop charging, your power steering will become manual steering and your air conditioning will stop working.

Is my transmission bad?

It may not be your transmission...

Many times people think that just because your engine starts and then your transmission doesn't engage and you don't move that the transmission is bad. Sometimes that is the case yes, and other times it is due to other factors and your transmission is completely fine.

In the case above is a great example of that. The engine would start and run great then when they put it into gear nothing would happen. They thought the transmission had gone out. Thankfully it was just the flex plate that had broke and separated. When this happens it separates the engine from the transmission. Without this contact your transmission will not engage and you will not be going anywhere. Thankfully this is fixable and we can get you back on the road again.

Why did my wheel bearing go bad?

That growling noise is a warning

Ever hear a strange growling or humming noise when driving? That noise is a warning that your wheel bearing may be failing. It's one of those parts that you don't think about often, or until something starts to go wrong. When it does go wrong not only does it affect your ride quality it can be a safety issue.

Your wheel bearing is located inside your hub assembly, this bearing connects your wheel to your axle. This bearing allows your wheels to spin with little friction. It also supports the weight of the vehicle. These bearings are sealed to prevent dirt, water and debris from getting into them causing damage.

Why did it take longer to stop on a wet road?

Give yourself some extra time.

Did you know that your tires have the best traction on dry pavement. It doesn't matter what kind of tire you buy, dry pavement is the best for stopping. Unfortunately we do not live in world where it's always dry. That means that extra precautions need to be taken when braking.

Rain, leaves, snow and ice can increase your stopping distance greatly. When the pavement is dry your stopping distance is around 120ft or 6 car lengths when going around 60mph. On wet pavement that number doubles. Wet leaves and debris on the road are like icy roads it can take 3-4 times longer than dry pavement.

Why did a mouse get in my dash

It's that time of year.

Mice and other rodents like to build nests in warm secure places. The inside of your dash is a great home for them. The issue is they cause damage to your wiring, blower motor and other components.

Now you're asking how do those little suckers get in there? Well they crawl in through your air intake duct. Then they make there way into your dash and use your insulation and anything else to make a nest.

If you find yourself with a pest problem we have a few recommendations for you.

Clean out everything from your vehicle that is not absolutely needed.
Never keep snacks or food in your vehicle - they are drawn by the smell. We all have that random granola bar. Time to toss it.
Have a mesh cover installed over your air duct. This will prevent them from entering your dash.

If they have already made a home, then we need to remove the next and clean out any debris. We would also recommend an ozone treatment to get rid of any smell that could be happening.

What is a disaster prevention kit?

This will save your fuel system.

This is for all those who have a Ford 6.7L diesel, but the CP4 pump information is relevant to all you Dodge, Chevy and GM guys too.

The CP4 pump was first introduced on the Ford 6.7L in 2011, since then it's been causing havoc and some broken hearts. The pump replaced the CP3 pump. The CP4 has a tendency to come apart internally and when that happens is spreads metal throughout the fuel system including your fuel injectors, fuel rail, fuel lines, lift pump and fuel tank. Unfortunately the only way to fix this is to replace all of the fuel components and clean out the fuel tank.

Thankfully we have a couple of options on how to prevent this catastrophic failure. The first one is to install a disaster prevention kit. This kit attaches to the CP4 pump and when the CP4 pump fails it catches the metal that is expelled. This protects the rest of your fuel system. Option two is to install a DCR pump that replaces that CP4 pump. The DCR pump does not have the same issues as the CP4.

Either way you go if you drive a diesel with a CP4 pump you need to be prepared for this. We know you have questions, we've got answers. Give us a call and let us take care of you.

Why did the grid heater on my Ram fail?

It's time to upgrade that system

If you own a 6.7L Cummins from 2009 to current, whether it’s in a Ram 2500, 3500, or 4500 then this affects you. You know that reliability, torque, and longevity are what make this engine a legend. Though like every great design, there’s one small flaw that can cause major damage if left unchecked the factory grid heater nut can become loose and cause engine damage and yes we have a way to fix this.

The fix is relatively easy. We remove the grid heater nut and install and nut delete kit. It actually does multiple things for your engine besides just protecting it from that nut that can cause damage. It also improves air flow and maintains your engines performance, your turbo will work better and it will give you more mid range power do to more air flow.

Why does my engine have carbon buildup?

It's more common than you think.

Almost all gas engines are now direct injected. The conversion started as early as 2002 - some manufacturers waited until 2010-2015 to make the switch. With this has come a new problem of carbon buildup. Previously engines were port injected. This prevented carbon build up because when the fuel was injected it was into the intake port and that allowed the fuel to pass over the intake valves and kept the carbon build up to a minimum.

New direct injection engines bypasses the intake port and the fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder. This allows for fuel to be more regulated into the cylinder and more precise timing. The trade off is carbon buildup on the intake valves.

We do have a way to help prevent carbon buildup on your engine. An induction service performed every 15,000 miles can help prevent carbon from building up on the intake valves. This service is only recommended to those who have lower mileage or new engines. If we were to perform this service on an already carboned engine then a piece of carbon could break off and cause engine damage.

Why is my radiator leaking?

It could be something simple

Some coolant leaks are simple, others are more complicated. Coolant can leak from your radiator, hoses, heater hoses, water pump, thermostat, heater core, and engine. Probably a few more too if you drive a diesel. So chasing a coolant leak can take time and typically we start with a cooling system pressure test. We pressurize your system and use a gauge to determine if you have an issue.

We ran into one the other that presented as the radiator was leaking at the filler neck. After inspecting the top of the radiator for a crack, they took off the radiator cap. When they did they found that the gasket on the radiator cap was damaged. This can happen over time. We replaced the radiator cap and no more leak. That was great news for this client.

Please if you are checking your coolant at home or if you are on the side of the road please please please make sure that your engine has cooled off prior to you removing your radiator cap. Your radiator cap is designed to hold anywhere from 15 to 21 psi this depends on your vehicle - some more some less. If your engine is hot that cap is pressurized and it can cause the liquid to vaporized and that causes severe burns. Make sure your engine has cooled off considerably to prevent an injury to you.

Why did my head gasket start leaking?

You've got questions, we've got answers

Your head gasket can leak externally or internally. Either way it's a serious condition for your engine. If your head gasket is leaking externally it can be engine oil or coolant, same goes with an internal leak.

If it is an external leak it is something that can be monitored if it is a seep. An active leak will need to be addressed immediately.

An internal leak is different and should be address immediately to prevent engine damage. There are three types of internal failure. The first being the classic coolant into the cylinder and out through the exhaust. This will present as low coolant and white exhaust. The second is where your head gasket allows coolant to get into your oil system. This is probably the most damaging as it can cause damage to other engine components including your engine main bearings, rod bearings, camshaft, lifters and more. The third is a lack of compression between two cylinders, this may present as a misfire with no fluid loss.

Why did my water pump start leaking?

Coolant leaks are critical care.

A coolant leak is not something that can be overlooked or waited on. When your coolant starts leaking the engine is no longer protected from excess temperature. Your water pump is part of your cooling system. It's job is to pump coolant aka water from the radiator to your engine and back. This allows your engine to stay at the proper temperature. When your engine operates at it's proper temperature it operates more efficiently. If you have a coolant leak then it needs to be addressed immediately to prevent a bigger issue.

How do I check my engine oil?

Your Detailed Guide

Did you know that many manufacturers allow your engine to burn or consume up to 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles. That means you need to be checking your oil at least every 1,000 miles driven.

I made an easy step by step instruction on how to check your oil. There are two ways you can check your oil either on a warm engine or cold engine.

You will need a clean rag or paper towel and to be parked on level surface.

Let's start with the warm engine check instructions.

Engine needs to be up to operating temperature.
Shut off engine and let sit for 5-10 minutes. This allows the engine oil to drain back into your oil pan.
Open the hood and locate your dipstick.
Pull out the dipstick, wipe it off on your clean rag or paper towel.
Put dipstick back in fully then pull out again. This will give you the proper reading of your oil level.
The low mark to the full mark is 1 quart.

Now the cold engine check instructions.

Let the car sit overnight.
Open the hood and locate your dipstick.

Let's talk about oil condition.

- Normal is amber colored to a dark brown (if you drive a diesel they go dark quickly)

- Red Flag - if your oil is milky or foamy, is metallic or has a strong fuel or burnt smell.

If you're adding oil only add 1/4 of a quart at a time, and recheck your level. Never overfill your engine oil. To much oil can cause issues just like not enough oil.

Why is my transmission shifting different?

It might not be your transmission

Did you know that engine problems can feel like a shifting problem with your transmission. If your engine has a misfire then it can feel like you are missing gears when driving. That a plugged exhaust will cause a lack of acceleration and mimic a transmission issue. These are just two examples of times that it's not in fact your transmission that is having an issue.

All newer transmissions are controlled by your vehicles computer - this can also be referred to as a control module. This computer controls the shift points and how the transmission reacts. This means that the computer can reduce engine power output to protect the transmission if there is another issue. Or it can command it into the wrong gear if it is getting the wrong information from a sensor. The problem with this is that it doesn't tell you that and you may think you have an issue with your transmission when it's in fact an issue with a completely different component on your vehicle.

Why does my oil filter keep clogging?

What a clogged oil filter means.

A clogged oil filter is concerning. When your oil filter is clogged then oil cannot pass through it properly. Your oil filter has a bypass valve at allows contaminants to flow through your engine. These contaminates can cause possible damage and premature engine failure. If your oil filter is getting clogged during regular maintenance then that is an indication that something else is going on with your engine. Prolonged oil change intervals and not changing your oil filter at every oil change can wreak havoc on your engine and it's components.

Brakes making a noise?

That noise that you hear when you step on the brakes is your brakes telling you that they need attention. Some - not all - brake pads come equipped with a squealer. This is a small addition to your brake pad that makes a noise when your brake pad is low. While brake pads do start at 10mm to 12mm depending if you are driving a passenger car or larger pickup they do wear every time you use your brakes.

Your brake pad clamps on to the brake rotor with the brake caliper; that friction is what stops you.

For some vehicles they have rear drums and shoes. Where in disc brakes you have a caliper that clamps the brake pad onto the disc rotor to stop. With shoes you have the opposite. The shoe gets pushed into the drum and that is what stops you. Brake shoes do wear more slowly than brake pads and that is by design.

Why did my belt start making noise?

That noise isn't in your head.

That squeak, screech, or chirp you hear, it's not you imagining things. It's happening and it is a cause for concern. That noise is coming from your engine and indicates that you have an issue. Typically the noise is from a worn out belt. Your serpentine belt is made to last from around 40,000 to 50,000 miles - this depends on your engine though. If you don't drive a lot then we recommend that you replace your serpentine belt every 3 to 5 years. Over time the rubber component will start to break down and that can cause a whole host of other issues.

It may not be your belt making noise though it could be a tensioner or pulley on the front of your engine. Over time the bearings inside will start to wear out and cause a noise. If one of your pulleys or tensioner are not aligned properly it will cause your belt to make noise and it can cause issues with other components.

Please Stay Calm and Stay Safe

The first priority is your safety and the safety of other drivers. As soon as you realize there’s a problem, turn on your hazard lights. If possible, try to coast your vehicle to the side of the road, a parking lot, or an emergency shoulder. The further you can get from traffic, the better.

Assess the Situation

Your car's cooling system is complex and is designed to dissipate the immense heat generated by the engine's combustion process.

Your radiator is a large heat exchanger that transfers heat from the coolant to the air. Your radiator is filled with coolant/antifreeze (same thing) this specialized fluid absorbs heat from the engine and carries it to the radiator. It gets there with the help of the water pump. This circulates the coolant throughout the engine and radiator. Your thermostat regulates the engine's temperature by controlling the flow of coolant. It is designed to open at close at specific temperatures keeping your engine at the correct temperature. Hoses which are attached to your radiator and water pump carry coolant between components. This goes for your heater hoses as well. Your cooling fan pulls air through the radiator, especially when the vehicle is moving slowly or stopped.

Signs that you could have a problem with your cooling system include the temperature gauge climbing. This is the most obvious sign. If your gauge starts moving past the normal operating range, it's a clear indication your engine is getting too hot. When this happens you should pull over when safe to do so and shut off your engine to prevent damage.

Life happens and mechanical parts do fail. The best way to help prevent a breakdown is preventative maintenance. Having your coolant checked and serviced. Replacing your hoses at the proper intervals and inspecting, belts, and checking for leaks.

Why Hot Weather is Tougher Than Cold on Your Battery

Summer brings beautiful sunshine and opportunities for road trips and outdoor adventures. But while we might be enjoying the warmth, our car batteries are often silently suffering under the intense heat. It might seem counterintuitive, but hot weather is actually tougher on your car battery than cold weather , and it's a common cause of unexpected summer breakdowns.

W e often see an uptick in battery-related issues during the summer months. Many a re surprised to learn that the warmer temperatures can be more detrimental to their battery's life span than the frosty mornings of winter.

So, why is the summer heat so hard on your car battery?

While cold weather's effects on a battery are more immediately noticeable with sluggish cranking and difficulty starting. The damage caused by high temperatures is often more insidious and leads to a gradual decline in performance. Here's how the heat takes its toll:

Accelerated Chemical Reactions: Batteries rely on chemical reactions to produce electricity. Higher temperatures speed up these reactions, but not always in a good way. This accelerated activity can lead to overcharging, even when the charging system is functioning correctly. Overcharging boils the electrolyte fluid inside the battery, causing it to evaporate.
Water Loss and Plate Corrosion: As the electrolyte fluid evaporates due to the heat, the internal lead plates of the battery become exposed to air. This exposure leads to oxidation and corrosion of the plates. Corrosion hinders the battery's ability to hold a charge and reduces its overall capacity.
Weakened Internal Structure: Extreme heat can also warp the plastic casing of the battery and damage its internal components. This can lead to shorts and other internal failures.
Increased Self-Discharge: All batteries naturally lose a small amount of charge over time, even when not in use (this is called self-discharge). High temperatures significantly accelerate this self-discharge rate, meaning your battery will lose its charge much faster in the summer heat.

The tricky thing about heat-related battery damage is that it often doesn't present with obvious symptoms until it's too late. Your car might start just fine on a hot day, lulling you into a false sense of security. However, the underlying damage is accumulating. Then, suddenly, on another hot day, you turn the key, and... nothing. This is why car battery dying in summer is a common experience.

Every time you turn on your car, your dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree, then most of them politely go out. But what happens when one of those lights decides to stay on? We can go through what they mean and what you need to do about them.

The "Traffic Light" System of Warning Lights

Before we dive into specific symbols, it's helpful to know the general meaning behind the colors:

Red Lights: These are the "STOP! IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUIRED!" signals. A red light usually indicates a serious problem that could affect your safety or cause significant damage to your vehicle if ignored. Pull over as soon as it's safe and address the issue promptly.
Yellow/Orange Lights: These are "CAUTION! SERVICE SOON!" indicators. While not always an immediate emergency, a yellow light means something needs to be checked relatively soon. Ignoring them can lead to bigger problems.
Green/Blue Lights: These are informational lights, letting you know a system is active e.g., high beams are on, cruise control is engaged. Nothing to worry about here!

Today we will go through what the red warning lights mean.

The Critical Red Warnings

1. Brake System Warning Light

It's going to look like an exclamation mark inside a circle, often with the word BRAKE.
This is a serious one! It can mean your parking brake is engaged, or more critically, that there's an issue with your vehicle's braking system, such as low brake fluid or a hydraulic problem.
If this light stays on after releasing the parking brake, pull over safely and immediately. DO NOT continue driving.

2. Oil Pressure Warning Light

This symbol will look like an oil can with a drip coming out.
This indicates low oil pressure in your engine. Engine oil is vital for lubricating moving parts and preventing catastrophic damage.
Pull over immediately, turn off the engine, and check your oil level. If it's low, you can add oil. If the light does not go off then turn off your engine. You will need to have your car towed to prevent engine damage.

3. Engine Temperature Warning Light

Symbol: A thermometer floating in liquid.
Meaning: Your engine is overheating! This is often due to low coolant, a radiator problem, or a faulty water pump. Overheating can cause severe and irreversible engine damage.
What to do: Pull over safely and turn off your engine. Allow the engine to cool down completely before carefully checking your coolant level. If there's steam or smoke, do not open the hood immediately. Call for roadside assistance.

4. Battery/Charging System Warning Light

A car battery with a plus and minus sign.
This light indicates a problem with your vehicle's charging system. It could be the alternator or battery.
Turn off all unnecessary electrical accessories - radio, lights, unplug your cell phone. Drive immediately to a service center if you're close.

5. Airbag Warning Light

This one will look like a person seated with a seatbelt, with a circle representing an airbag.
This means there's a fault with your airbag system or related components. This means the airbags might not deploy in a collision, or in rare cases, could deploy unexpectedly.
While not an immediate "pull over" emergency, get this checked as soon as possible. Your safety depends on a fully functioning airbag system.

Why isn't my A/C Cold?

As the temperature rises this summer, there's nothing worse than turning on your car's AC only to be greeted by hot or lukewarm air. We've all been there! Before you resign yourself to the windblown look, let's talk about why your car's AC might be holding out on you and what needs to be done to get that cold air back.

Common Culprits Behind a Weak AC

Your car's air conditioning system is a complex network of components working in harmony to keep you cool. When one part isn't doing its job, the whole system suffers. Here are some of the most frequent reasons why your AC isn't blowing cold enough.

Your refrigerant may be low. While your AC is a sealed system, minor leaks can occur over time, leading to a gradual loss of refrigerant. If your refrigerant levels are low, your AC simply can't cool the air effectively. When the levels get to be to low then your AC compressor will not turn on. Your AC system has specific levels that amounts so that stuff in a can isn't going to do you much good. Overcharging your system is damaging to it as well.

If your refrigerant is low, there's almost certainly a leak somewhere in the system. These leaks can be tiny, occurring in hoses, seals, the condenser, or the evaporator.

The compressor is what makes your AC system work. It's responsible for pressurizing and circulating the refrigerant. If the compressor is failing, or its clutch isn't engaging properly, the refrigerant won't be moved through the system, and you won't get cold air.

You AC Condenser is located at the front of your car, the condenser looks similar to a radiator. Its job is to cool the hot, high-pressure refrigerant. If it's clogged with dirt, leaves, or road debris, or if its fins are damaged, it can't dissipate heat effectively, leading to warmer air in the cabin.

Electrical Issues: The AC system relies on various electrical components, including fuses, relays, and sensors. A blown fuse or a faulty sensor can prevent the system from engaging or functioning correctly.

Myth #1: "You Can Wait to Change Your Oil at 10,000 miles"

This is perhaps one of the most persistent car maintenance myths. Some engines need oil changes at 3,000 miles and others can wait until 5,000 miles. Yes some manufacturers are stating that you can go 10,000 miles, but then when something goes wrong they do not cover the repairs "from lack of maintenance" While some people do wait that long, it is not good for the health of your engine. Extending your oil change service can damage the components that rely on oil to work correctly.

Myth #2: "Premium Gas is Always Better for Your Car."

It's tempting to think that if "premium" costs more, it must offer superior performance or protection for your engine. Not so fast!

Unless your car's manufacturer specifically requires premium fuel, using it offers no benefit to your vehicle's performance, fuel economy, or engine longevity. You're simply paying more for no added value. That being said if your engine calls for premium fuel then you need to add premium fuel to it. Otherwise you can be damaging internal components.

Myth #3: "You Should Only Get Your Car Serviced at the Dealership."

Many people believe that dealerships are the only place to get proper service for their specific make and model. While dealerships offer certain advantages, they are far from your only, or always best, option. Having your vehicle serviced by an independent repair facility will not void your warranty. You can take your car to whomever you choose.

Coolant Leak?

A coolant leak is not something to mess around with. Keeping your engine at the proper operating temperature is critical to the health of your engine. Your engine has a closed cooling system. This system consists of your water pump, thermostat, radiator, heater core and hoses.

The water pump is an important piece of your cooling system. It pumps coolant from your radiator and back to help keep your engine at the proper temperature. If your water pump is leaking that is an indication that your water pump is beginning to fail. That failure can lead to your engine overheating and possible engine damage.

A guide for proper maintenance

The 30 - 60 - 90 rule is talking about maintenance for your vehicle. It's specific maintenance that is recommended by manufacturers and some we have found as best practices to keep your vehicle worry free.

Your vehicle is due for an oil change every 3,000 or 5,000 miles depending on the type of oil that it uses. Then it has a few other little things every 15,000 that are recommended. Every 30,000 miles your vehicle is due for more services and depending on your vehicle as they are specific that might include transmission fluid service, differential services, filters and other fluids.

Why does my vehicle have a vibration?

That shaking isn't suppose to be there.

We've all ridden in a vehicle at one time or another that had a vibration. Depends on who you are you might call it a wobble, a shake, a shutter, a vibration. All of those things are not normal and should not be happening.

A vibration can be as simple as you having a tire that is out of balance. It could be an issue with your drivetrain, steering, front end components, wheel bearings, driveline or even your engine. I am sure I missed the other dozen things that can cause a vibration when you drive. With it being so many different options the only way to know is to have it checked to make sure you're safe on the road.

How to check you engine oil

Checking your oil is a very important thing to be able to do on your own. Some engines burn a small amount of oil during operation. Checking your oil is important because most manufacturers have an oil burning allowance of up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles driven. This means if you're engine holds 4 quarts of oil and you have a 5,000 mile oil change interval you could run out of oil before your next oil change. Running out of oil can cause engine damage and failure.

To check your oil it does not matter if your engine is hot or cold. If you check your oil after your car has sat overnight, then the oil level can read higher due to the fact that the oil has time to drain down into your oil pan.

Step one: If your engine is running turn it off

Step two: Get a clean rag or towel - even a paper towel will work

Step three: Open hood

Step four: Locate your engine oil dipstick

Step five: Pull out the dipstick, clean off the oil. Look at your dipstick it typically has a minimum and maximum level. On a gas car this range indicates 1 quart of oil. On a larger diesel engine this may be 2 quarts.

Step six: Re-insert the dipstick and pull it out again.

Step seven: Where is your oil level?

Step eight: Keep your oil at the maximum level, but do NOT overfill your oil this can cause your oil to foam.

Why is my car leaking coolant

Coolant leak?

That puddle under the front of your vehicle is not something that should be ignored. Your coolant is just as important as your engine oil. There are many components that your coolant flows through to keep your engine operating at it's proper temperature.

When your coolant gets hot then it pressurizes your cooling system. This pressurization occurs because your coolant expands. One of the key pieces of equipment to keep your coolant where it should be is your radiator cap. Your radiator cap is designed for your radiator and the amount of pressure that is designed to have. If your seal looks like the on above or if your cap is damaged it can allow coolant to leak out.

Remember never open a hot radiator. The fluid is boiling hot and will burn you.

When should I schedule a pre-trip inspection?

Road trip time?

Summer is almost here and that means it's time to prepare to hit the open road. Our country is vast and beautiful with so much to offer even in our own backyard.

Where are you headed this summer?

Do you have your favorite place that you go to every year?

Headed to the mountains? The beach?

We will be headed to the high desert this year for a few days, maybe we will stop by the Painted Hills or the Alvord Desert.

Our recommendation is to get your vehicle in 2-3 weeks prior to your trip. This allows for enough time for repairs if any are needed, No one wants issues with their car when you're not on a road trip, to have them while you're on vacation is even worse. Of course random things do happen, but this does give you the best opportunity for one less thing to worry about.

Why is my car shaking when I drive?

Got a shake?

When your vehicle is shaking when driving not only is it annoying, but it is also a sign that something is wrong. It's your vehicles way of saying hey I want some attention.

Your vehicle has many components that can contribute to the shaking. The shaking could be from something as simple as a lost wheel weight, an issue with one of the steering or suspension components. Anything from shocks, struts, tie rods, axles to track bars and drag links on pickups.

A shake can also be from your engine. A misfire can feel like a shake when driving. A bad motor mount can cause a shake from the engine not being secured properly.

If your vehicle starts to shake violently then you need to slow down as quickly as you can in a safe manner. This is considered a death wobble and when that occurs you can lose control of your vehicle.

Shaking while braking that is an entirely different scenario. Most likely if you have a shake while you are braking then it's a warped brake rotor or an issue with one of your brake calipers.

Why does my Air Conditioning Blow Hot?

Let's keep you cool this summer.

Things are starting to heat up out there and summer is just around the corner. That first warm day when you get in your car and you turn on your A/C and it only blows hot. Not what I would call pleasant. While your Air Conditioning system is a closed system and should not leak, it does have fittings, hoses and seals. If one of those has failed it can leak out your refrigerant and cause your air conditioning system to not work properly.

Your air conditioning system is made up of multiple components including the compressor, condenser, a/c lines, evaporator core and receiver dryer. Not all systems are the same and some have other components.

What to do? Your system needs to be tested for leaks and have dye injected into it to see where the issue is. We service both R134 and R1234 systems so no matter what you drive we can take care of you.

I can't stress enough how crucial a clean fuel filter is for the health and performance of your diesel engine. It's often overlooked, but neglecting this simple maintenance task can poolead to some seriously frustrating – and expensive – problems.

Think of your fuel filter as the unsung hero of your fuel system. It's constantly working to trap contaminants like dirt, rust, water, and even microbial growth before they can wreak havoc on your injectors and fuel pump. When that filter gets clogged, it's like trying to breathe through a thick blanket – your engine struggles to get the fuel it needs.

So, the million-dollar question: when exactly should you be changing that vital component? Here’s the lowdown from a professional perspective:

The Manufacturer's Recommendation: Your First and Best Guide

Without a doubt, your vehicle's owner's manual is the ultimate authority on maintenance schedules. Diesel engine manufacturers invest significant time and research to determine the optimal service intervals for their specific engines. Always prioritize their recommended fuel filter change interval. This is usually expressed in mileage or time (whichever comes first).

Beyond the Manual: Factors That Can Shorten Filter Life

What to know about a 3.0L diesel engine

Let's talk about the 3.0L engine.

Ford's 3.0L Power Stroke V6 diesel, is a prime example of a compact diesel engine. Like any piece of machinery, proper maintenance is important to ensure its reliability and performance over the long haul.

This engine, while smaller than its Super Duty kin, delivers a balance of power and fuel efficiency, making it a popular choice. Its design incorporates modern diesel technologies like common-rail direct injection.

Regular maintenance of your engine can prevent breakdowns.

Oil and Filter Changes: This is the lifeblood of any engine, and the 3.0L diesel is no exception. Diesel engines generate more soot and put more stress on the oil. Your engine oil should be changed every 5,000 miles.
Fuel Filter Replacement: Diesel fuel can contain contaminants that can damage the high-pressure fuel injection system. Regularly replacing the fuel filter every 15,000 miles is essential to protect the injectors and fuel pump.
Air Filter Replacement: A clean air filter ensures proper airflow into the engine. A clogged filter can reduce performance and fuel economy. Your engine loves nothing more than clean air.
Coolant System Service: Maintaining the correct coolant level and condition is vital for temperature regulation. Coolant should be changed every 3 years because the additives break down - anti-corrosive and the lubricate.

Now let's chat about the The Rear Engine Accessory Drive (READ) Belt. The 3.0L Power Stroke features an accessory drive belt located at the rear of the engine, facing the firewall. This unique placement often raises questions and can complicate replacement compared to traditional front-mounted belts. This rear belt drives the high pressure fuel injection pump. Ford has a recommended replacement interval for this belt of 150,000 miles. We have found that failure of this belt is happening closer to the 100,000 mile internal. We are now recommending the belt be replaced at 90,000 to 100,000 miles to prevent a costly tow bill and additional down time. Ignoring a worn rear belt can lead to a complete failure, leaving you stranded and potentially causing damage to other components.

Timing Belt: This engine also uses a camshaft timing belt on the front of the engine. This belt is for the camshafts. It should be changed around the same time that you change the rear engine accessory drive belt. If this belt breaks it can cause catastrophic engine damage and or failure.

Serpentine Belts: You have two more belts on the front of this engine. These belts drive the water pump, alternator and A/C compressor. These belts should be inspected at each oil change and replaced as needed. Typically near 60,000 miles.

Turbocharger: The turbocharger is a vital component of the diesel engine. Regular maintenance of oil changes and cooling system services can prolong the life of your turbocharger.

Why is my car taking a long time to warm up

Gauge not moving?

Yes it's spring and summer is just around the corner with that warmer weather. It's still chilly in the morning though when I leave for work. Those days I am thankful for my heater. How is yours working? If it feels like it's taking forever for that warm air to start blowing and when it's not frozen outside then you probably have something else going on.

Your heat from your vents comes from your heater core. Your heater core gets it's heat from your engine. Coolant circulates from your radiator to cool off your engine, from there the coolant is hot so it cycles through your heater core (warming you up) then goes to the radiator before it begins the cycle again.

If one of your cooling system components are leaking, faulty or worn out it can cause an issue within the cycle. If you're having issues with your heater give us a call and let us take care of you.

Understanding the Ticking Trouble in Your Engine

A persistent ticking sound or rough engine performance could indicate a collapsed lifter. Your lifters are an important component responsible for valve operation. When a lifter fails, it disrupts this process, potentially causing significant engine problems. Including damage to the camshaft.

The cause that we typically see with a collapsed lifter is extending your oil changes past recommended mileage. Contaminated or insufficient oil can prevent the lifter from functioning properly. This leads to failure. Mileage can also contribute to wear and tear, eventually causing a lifter to collapse.

Regular oil changes with the correct type of oil are the number one thing for preventing lifter collapse. Paying attention to any unusual engine noises can also help catch potential issues before become an issue.

Replacing a collapsed lifter involves accessing your engines internal components. This can be as simple as removing a valve cover, or we may need to remove the cylinder head. With a collapsed lifter we recommend inspecting the camshaft for damage.

Please do not ignore strange engine noises. What might seem like a minor issue can become a bigger one. Over time a collapsed lifter can cause engine failure.

The Uninvited Guests

You turn on the AC or heat, and instead of a refreshing breeze, you're greeted with a musty odor or weak airflow. It might even be worse, you could have a smell. On top of that you now have a strange rattling sound emanating from behind the dashboard. You might be dealing with a common problem: rodents. They have decided your car's ventilation system is their new home. Rodents nesting in your car can lead to significant damage, particularly to your cabin air filter and blower motor.

To a small rodent like a mouse or rat, your car's ventilation system offers a surprisingly appealing environment. It has shelter, it's warm, your cabin air filter makes great nest material and many of us eat in the car too - those crumbs are a tasty treat.

Your cabin air filter is designed to trap dust, pollen, and other airborne particles from entering your car's cabin. Unfortunately, its fibrous material is also incredibly attractive to rodents for nesting. They will happily shred and chew on the filter, leaving behind a mess of debris, droppings, and potentially introducing unpleasant odors and allergens into your car's air.

The blower motor is responsible for circulating air through your car's ventilation system. When rodents infest this area, several problems can arise. The cause an obstruction with nesting materials. This can prevent your blower motor from moving properly. When this happens it can overload the system and damage the motor.

The way to prevent any of this from happening is to prevent them from getting into your vehicle to begin with.

Keep Your Car Clean. Avoid leaving food wrappers, crumbs, or sugary drinks inside your vehicle. I know that can be difficult when you have smaller kids.

We can install a wire cloth over the air intake and this can stop one point of access to them.

Mice really dislike dryer sheets, placing one in your glove box can help deter them.

Carbon Buildup and Your EGR Valve

One common culprit behind performance issues is carbon buildup, and a key player in this scenario is your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. While the EGR system is designed to reduce harmful emissions, its very function can contribute to the accumulation of stubborn carbon deposits. Let's dive into what carbon buildup is, how the EGR system is involved, and what you can do about it.

Carbon buildup - During the combustion process, fuel and air ignite to create power. However, this process isn't always perfectly clean. Small amounts of unburnt fuel, oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation system (PCV), and soot can be left behind. Over time, these byproducts bake onto various engine components, forming a hard, black, tar-like substance – carbon buildup.

Intake Manifold and Ports: Restricting airflow into the cylinders.

Intake Valves: Hindering proper valve sealing and airflow.

Combustion Chamber: Reducing volume and potentially causing hot spots.

Piston Rings: Leading to blow-by and reduced compression.

EGR Valve and Passages: Causing the valve to stick or become blocked.

The EGR system plays a crucial role in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, a major contributor to smog. It works by recirculating a small portion of the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold. These exhaust gases are inert (low in oxygen), which lowers the combustion temperature, thus reducing NOx formation.

So, where does the carbon buildup come in? The exhaust gases being recirculated contain the very byproducts that contribute to carbon deposits: soot, unburnt fuel particles, and oil residue. As these gases pass through the EGR valve and its associated passages, these particles can stick and accumulate, especially in areas where the flow is restricted or temperatures are lower.

Excessive carbon buildup and a malfunctioning EGR valve can lead to a range of performance problems.

Reduced Engine Performance. Restricted airflow and inefficient combustion lead to a noticeable decrease in power and acceleration.

Poor Fuel Economy. The engine has to work harder to compensate for the restricted airflow, resulting in increased fuel consumption.

Rough Idling. Irregular combustion due to carbon deposits on valves can cause the engine to idle unevenly.

Hesitation or Stuttering. Especially during acceleration, the engine might hesitate or stutter due to improper airflow or EGR function.

Increased Emissions. A blocked or stuck EGR valve can prevent it from properly reducing NOx emissions, potentially leading to failed emissions tests.

Engine Knocking or Pinging. Carbon deposits in the combustion chamber can create hot spots that cause pre-ignition or knocking.

Check Engine Light. A faulty EGR valve or significant carbon buildup can trigger the check engine light.

What Can You Do About Carbon Buildup and EGR Issues?

While some carbon buildup is inevitable over time, there are steps you can take to minimize its impact and maintain a healthy EGR system:

Regular Maintenance. Follow your vehicle's recommended maintenance schedule, including oil changes. Fresh, high-quality oil can help reduce oil vapor entering the intake system.

Quality Fuel. Using higher-quality fuel with detergents can help keep fuel injectors clean and potentially reduce some carbon deposits.

Short Trip Avoidance. Short trips don't allow the engine to fully heat up, which can exacerbate carbon buildup. Try to incorporate longer drives when feasible.

Engine Load. Occasionally giving your engine a bit of a workout can help burn off some carbon deposits.

What's the Difference between a timing chain and timing belt?

Timing belt or timing chain?

Your engine is a finely orchestrated machine, that has the crucial task of valve timing. Valve timing is important as it ensures the intake and exhaust valves open and close in perfect timing with the pistons. Two key components handle this vital job: the timing belt and/or the timing chain. While both achieve the same goal, they differ significantly in their construction, maintenance requirements, and lifespan.

Timing Belt

Your timing belt is a reinforced rubber belt with teeth on its inner surface. It connects the crankshaft - which powers the pistons - to the camshaft- depending on your engine you may have more than one. Your camshaft controls the valves. The teeth ensure a precise, non-slip connection, guaranteeing accurate timing. As you are already aware rubber does degrade over time due to heat, friction and flexing. Manufacturers have a specific time interval and making sure these are done on time can prevent your timing belt from breaking and causing engine damage.

Timing Chain

Think of a miniature bicycle chain, but much stronger and more precisely engineered. This is your timing chain. It's made of interconnected metal links and also connects the crankshaft to the camshaft - sometimes you have more than one. Since the timing chain is made of metal, timing chains are designed to last much longer than a timing belt. They are less susceptible to wear and tear compared to rubber belts. Poor maintenance can cause your timing chain to wear out sooner then expected and needing to be replaced.

What are our recommendations?

Ask questions about your engine. Make sure you know what maintenance is going to be required of your vehicle.

Stick to a Maintenance Schedule. If you have a timing belt, replace it at the recommended intervals. Never wait until it breaks.

Strange Noises? While timing chains are generally more durable, listen for any unusual rattling or whining sounds coming from the engine.

Regular Maintenance. Regardless of whether you have a belt or a chain, regular oil changes are crucial of all engine components, including the timing components.

Do you know when you should change your air filter?

When we're talking about filters your diesel has many of them. Air filter, fuel filter, cabin air filter, diesel patriciate filter, and the list goes on. Today we are going to chat about your engines air filter.

How do I know when my car needs an oil change

The Oil Change Question: How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

How often do I really need to change my oil? It's a question that's been debated for decades, and the answer is pretty straightforward.

For some engines it's still the 3,000 mile rule for others the standard is now 5,000 miles. Some manufacturers are recommending even longer intervals but we have found that when you stretch your oil changes longer than that then engine damage and failure can occur.

The standard recommendation is to change your engine oil every 3,000 miles (or every 3 months). This is still a good rule for engines that do not take full synthetic engine oil. If your engine takes full synthetic engine oil then the recommendation goes to 5,000 miles (or every 5 months).

Difference comes down to the type of oil that your engine takes.

Synthetic oils are designed to last longer and provide better protection against wear and tear. These are the ones that can go 5,000 between oil changes.

Synthetic Blends: These oils offer a balance between conventional and synthetic. We recommend a 3,000 mile oil change with this oil.

Lubrication: Oil lubricates the engine's moving parts, reducing friction and wear.

Cooling: Oil helps to dissipate heat from the engine.

Cleaning: Oil helps to remove dirt, debris, and contaminants from the engine

Protection: Oil helps to prevent corrosion and oxidation.

Don't Forget the Oil Filter: It's crucial to change your oil filter every time you change your oil. A dirty oil filter can restrict oil flow and reduce the effectiveness of your new oil.

My diesel will not accelerate and the RPM's go up. Why?

Why?

When your vehicle is struggling to accelerate and the RPM’s are going up we find that is one of two issues typically.

One is an issue with your engine. You can have a mass air flow sensor that is failing, the throttle body sensor and or a clogged catalytic converter.

The other common issue is something with the transmission. If the internal components of your transmission are worn out or damaged it then it can cause your transmission to not engage properly leading to a lack of acceleration and the RPM’s going up.

The best way to know what is going on with your vehicle is to have it checked to keep you and your family safe on the road.

Why does my car make a chirping noise when I start it?

Chirping noise?

That chirp under the hood is usually an underlying cause to another issue. Typically, it is not something to cause panic, but it is something that needs to be addressed before it causes other issues.

We find the chirp is usually from the serpentine belt. Over time your belt gets worn, it can also become misaligned and or damaged. Any of these things will make your belt chirp especially when it is cold.

There are other components other than your belt that can make the same or a similar sound. Including your idler pulley, water pump bearing and power steering pump. This is why it is best to have it checked to make sure we know which component is making the noise to keep you safe on the road.

Water: Water in the fuel tank can cause corrosion and rust, damaging the pump and other fuel system components.
Ethanol: While most modern cars are designed to handle fuel with some ethanol content, higher concentrations or prolonged exposure can degrade rubber and plastic components in older fuel pumps.

2. Running on Low Fuel:

Your oil breaks down over time and stops lubricating properly. We suggest that you change your engine oil every 3,000 miles for conventional or synthetic blend and every 5,000 miles for full synthetic. For diesel's we recommend every 5,000 miles.
