Your engine will not run without them.
This one is just for our gas engines, diesels do not have spark plugs. I promise to talk about glow plugs soon.
Spark plugs create the spark your engine needs to run. Your engine takes in air and fuel, compresses that mixture, and then uses the spark plug to ignite it. This process happens over and over again while your engine is running. When spark plugs are clean and working correctly, your engine can run smoothly. When they are worn, dirty, or failing, the engine may not burn fuel properly. That can lead to poor performance, rough idling, misfires, and lower fuel mileage. Which with gas prices the way they are we need all the help we can get.
Over time the metal tips can wear down, carbon can build up, and the gap between the electrodes can change. When that gap gets too wide or the plug becomes dirty, the spark may become weak. A weak spark can make it harder for your engine to run the way it should.
Different vehicles use different types of spark plugs. Some may need replacement sooner, while others are designed to last much longer. The best schedule depends on your vehicle, engine, driving habits, and manufacturer recommendations.
Your vehicle will often give you warning signs when spark plugs are worn. You may notice rough idling, slow acceleration, poor fuel mileage, engine misfires, or trouble starting the vehicle. A check engine light can also come on when spark plugs or ignition parts are not working properly. While the light does not always mean the spark plugs are the problem, it is a sign that diagnostics should be performed.
Other signs may include shaking, hesitation when accelerating, or a lack of power when climbing hills or merging onto the highway.
If your spark plugs are not firing correctly, your engine may waste fuel. That means you could be stopping at the gas station more often than you should. Good spark plugs help the engine burn fuel more efficiently. Replacing worn spark plugs can help your vehicle run cleaner, smoother, and more efficiently. For drivers who use their vehicles every day for work, errands, school, and family travel, better fuel mileage can make a real difference over time.
If your vehicle is running rough, using more fuel, hesitating, or showing a check engine light, do not wait for the problem to get worse. Schedule an inspection and let a trusted auto repair shop find the cause.
