Winter is coming are you ready?

Winter driving can be unpredictable. One day the roads are simply wet. The next, you may be dealing with heavy rain, freezing temperatures, snow, ice, or a trip over the mountains. Preparing your vehicle before winter weather arrives can help reduce the chances of a breakdown and make it easier to handle changing road conditions safely. Here are some of the most important things to check before winter travel begins.

Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road, so their condition matters year-round. During winter, traction becomes even more important. Check: Tire tread depth, Tire pressure, Uneven wear, Cracking or damage, Overall tire condition. Cold temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop, so it is a good idea to check it more often during the winter months. If you travel into areas where snow and ice are common, make sure your tires and traction equipment are appropriate for the conditions you may encounter.

Wet, icy, or snowy roads already increase stopping distance. Worn brakes can make that even more difficult. Pay attention to symptoms such as: Squealing or grinding, Pulling while braking, Vibration, A soft brake pedal, Longer stopping distance. If something feels different, have it inspected before you head into winter travel.

Cold weather can expose a weak battery. A battery that seemed fine during warmer weather may struggle once temperatures drop. Watch for: Slow cranking, Clicking, Needing a jump start, Dim lights during startup, Intermittent starting problems. Testing your battery before winter is much easier than discovering it is weak on a cold morning.

Your battery is only part of the electrical system. The alternator is responsible for supplying electrical power while the engine is running and helping keep the battery charged. If the charging system is not working correctly, even a good battery can end up discharged. If you have had electrical problems, warning lights, or repeated dead batteries, the charging system should be tested too.

Good visibility is especially important during winter. Rain, road spray, mud, and snow can quickly make it difficult to see.

Make sure: Wiper blades are in good condition, Washer fluid is full, Washer nozzles work, Headlights are clean and functioning,

Defrosters work properly. If your wipers streak, skip, or leave large areas of the windshield untouched, it is probably time to replace them.

Your heater is not only about comfort. The defroster helps keep your windshield clear. If your vehicle takes a long time to warm up, the heater does not work well, or the windshield refuses to clear, have the problem checked before colder weather arrives.

It may seem strange to think about coolant during winter, but your cooling system is important in cold weather too. Coolant helps regulate engine temperature and protects the system from freezing. A cooling-system inspection can help identify:

Low coolant, Leaks, Worn hoses, Belt problems, Thermostat issues, Other cooling-system concerns.

Cold weather can be hard on rubber components. Belts and hoses that are already worn may become more likely to crack or fail. A quick inspection can help catch problems before they leave you stranded.

Even a well-maintained vehicle can become stuck because of weather, traffic, or road closures. It is a good idea to carry a few basic supplies, especially if you are traveling into the mountains or more remote areas. Consider keeping: Warm clothing or blankets, Water, Snacks, Flashlight, Phone charger, Jumper cables or a jump pack, Basic first-aid supplies, Traction devices when needed

You do not have to drive through a snowstorm for winter conditions to affect your vehicle. Heavy rain, cold mornings, standing water, poor visibility, and slick roads are all part of winter driving. A little preparation can make a big difference.

Our goal is to help you stay ahead of problems so your vehicle is ready for whatever your next trip brings. Whether you are driving to work, visiting family, or heading over the mountains for the holidays, we want you to get there safely.
