Now What?

You're driving along and suddenly, your car sputters, a warning light flashes on the dash, and the engine dies. It's a stressful situation, but knowing what to do can make all the difference. Here’s a quick guide on what to do if your car breaks down.

Please Stay Calm and Stay Safe

The first priority is your safety and the safety of other drivers. As soon as you realize there’s a problem, turn on your hazard lights. If possible, try to coast your vehicle to the side of the road, a parking lot, or an emergency shoulder. The further you can get from traffic, the better.

Assess the Situation

Once you're in a safe location, take a moment. Identifying the problem can help you explain the situation to a tow truck driver or mechanic.

Make Your Car Visible

If it's dark or if visibility is poor, make sure your car is as visible as possible. Use flares or reflective triangles if you have them in your emergency kit. You can also tie a white cloth or rag to your antenna or car door to signal that you need help.

Call for Help

This is where having a roadside assistance plan, like AAA, can be a lifesaver. If you don't have one, call a local tow company or mechanic. Be prepared to give them your exact location and a description of your vehicle and the problem.

Never Walk on the Roadway

Don't attempt to walk on a busy highway to find help. It's extremely dangerous. Stay inside your locked vehicle and wait for help to arrive. If you must get out, do so only on the side of the car away from traffic.

Keep an Emergency Kit

This is a great lesson for future driving. An emergency kit with essentials like a first-aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight, flares or reflective triangles, a tire jack, a portable battery bank for your phone, and some water and snacks can be invaluable.

While a breakdown is never fun, being prepared and knowing these steps can help you handle the situation safely and efficiently.
