It makes sure your coolant circulates through your engine.

Your water pump circulates coolant through your engine, radiator, heater core, and hoses. This keeps your engine at a safe operating temperature.
Your water It pushes coolant through the engine to absorb heat. It then circulates through your heater core to provide heat to you. Then it travels back to your radiator where the radiator releases that heat into the air. Then coolant returns to the engine and the cycle continues.
Without a working water pump, coolant cannot circulate properly. The engine can overheat quickly, which can lead to serious damage such as a blown head gasket, warped cylinder head, or engine failure.
Common signs of a failing water pump include coolant leaks, overheating, a whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine, steam, or low coolant.
