These leaks can cause bigger issues

If your all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle has a leaking PTU seal, it is important to have it repaired before the problem becomes more serious. The PTU which stands for Power Transfer Unit, it helps transfer engine power from the transmission to the front and rear wheels. It is an important part of the drivetrain on many all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The PTU contains gears and bearings that must stay lubricated. Seals are used around shafts and connection points to keep the PTU fluid inside the unit while keeping dirt, water, and other contaminants out. Over time, a PTU seal can become hard, worn, cracked, or damaged. When this happens, fluid can begin leaking from the unit.
The PTU does not hold a large amount of fluid. Even a small leak can eventually lower the fluid level enough to cause lubrication problems. Without enough fluid, the internal gears and bearings can create excessive heat and friction. This may lead to premature wear, unusual noises, or complete PTU failure. Replacing a seal is usually much less expensive than replacing an entire damaged PTU.
