That noise isn't in your head.

That squeak, screech, or chirp you hear, it's not you imagining things. It's happening and it is a cause for concern. That noise is coming from your engine and indicates that you have an issue. Typically the noise is from a worn out belt. Your serpentine belt is made to last from around 40,000 to 50,000 miles - this depends on your engine though. If you don't drive a lot then we recommend that you replace your serpentine belt every 3 to 5 years. Over time the rubber component will start to break down and that can cause a whole host of other issues.


It may not be your belt making noise though it could be a tensioner or pulley on the front of your engine. Over time the bearings inside will start to wear out and cause a noise. If one of your pulleys or tensioner are not aligned properly it will cause your belt to make noise and it can cause issues with other components.
