Your vehicle’s axles transfer power from the transmission or differential to the wheels. They help your wheels turn while supporting the movement of the vehicle. When an axle or CV axle begins to fail, continuing to drive can turn a manageable repair into a problem.
One of the most common signs of a worn axle is a clicking or popping noise when turning. You may also notice vibrations while driving, clunking when accelerating or slowing down, or grease splattered around the inside of a wheel. Grease near the wheel often means the boot has torn, allowing lubrication to escape and dirt or moisture to enter the joint.
A damaged axle usually does not repair itself. As the joint continues to wear, the clicking, vibration, or clunking will often become more noticeable. Eventually, the axle may fail completely. When that happens, the vehicle may no longer be able to transfer power to the wheels, leaving you stranded.
