Your fuel gauge may be bouncing around due to a faulty fuel level sending unit. When your fuel level sending unit starts to go out it will cause your fuel gauge to read improperly. This can cause you to run out of fuel while driving if it's not reading correctly and leave you stranded on the side of the road. Some of these sensors are integrated into your fuel pump and other times they are separate.
