A plugged heater core can cause big issues

The picture above shows a heavy buildup of debris around the heater core. Even when coolant is flowing correctly inside the heater core, packed debris can prevent air from moving through its fins. Leaves, dirt, dust, pet hair, rodent nesting material, and other debris can collect inside the heater core housing. This buildup can reduce airflow from the vents, causing your heater and air conditioner to not work properly. It can also create unpleasant odors, place extra strain on the blower motor, and make it harder to defrost the windshield.

Poor cabin heat does not always mean the heater core has failed. Low coolant, a stuck-open thermostat, air trapped in the cooling system, an issue with a blend door, a weak water pump, a restricted coolant hose, a blower motor problem, or a clogged cabin air filter can cause similar symptoms. Proper testing is important before replacing a heater core. On many vehicles, heater core replacement requires significant dashboard disassembly, so it is important to confirm the cause of the problem first.

Weak heat, foggy windows, a coolant smell, wet carpet, or reduced airflow can all be signs of a heating-system problem. Finding the cause early may help prevent interior damage, engine overheating, and more expensive repairs.
