Does a misfire mean I need a tune up?

A misfire is an indication that something is wrong with your engine. It could mean that your spark plugs are worn out and they are due for replacement. It could also mean that you have a problem with one of your other ignition components. The components on your engine are lasting longer due to new technology, but they still wear out. Depending on the manufacturer of your engine you may need new spark plugs at every 30,000, 60,000 or 90,000 miles. We have seen a few manufacturers that are putting new spark plugs required at every 120,000 miles. For those engines we have found the spark plugs need to be changed before the 120,000-mile mark and are typically failing around the 90,000-mile interval.

Your engine can have a misfire due to a faulty ignition coil. If the ignition coil fails, then it will cause a misfire in the engine. It can damage the spark plug as well. Another reason for a misfire is a fouled spark plug. If you have an oil leak on your engine, then the oil can travel down and into the spark plug tubes. When this happens your spark plugs get covered in oil and they will have a misfire. When this occurs the engine oil leak will need to be repaired and the spark plugs replaced.
