Let's keep your engine running smooth

A timing chain is an important part inside your vehicle’s engine. It connects the crankshaft at the bottom of the engine to the camshaft or camshafts at the top. Its job is to keep these parts moving together at exactly the right time.

As the engine runs, the timing chain helps control when the engine’s valves open and close. This allows air and fuel to enter the cylinders and exhaust gases to leave. If the timing is off, the engine may run poorly or may not run at all.

Timing chains are made of metal and are usually designed to last longer than timing belts. However, they are not always maintenance-free. The chain, guides, tensioners, and other related parts can wear over time. Regular oil changes are especially important because the timing chain and its components depend on clean engine oil for lubrication and proper operation.

Signs of a timing chain problem may include a rattling noise when the engine starts, a check engine light, poor performance, rough running, misfires, or difficulty starting. In some cases, a worn timing chain can stretch or jump out of position. If the chain breaks or the timing changes too much, serious internal engine damage can occur.

Having unusual engine noises or warning lights inspected early can help prevent a timing chain problem from becoming a much larger and more expensive repair.
