If you’ve noticed a strong smell of gasoline in or around your car, it’s something you shouldn’t ignore. A gas smell isn’t just unpleasant—it can be a sign that something is wrong with your vehicle and couple potentional be dangerous. 

One of the most common reasons your car might smell like gas is a gasoline leak. There are several places where a leak can occur:

- Fuel lines - your fuel lines carry gasoline from the tank to the engine. If these lines become cracked, damaged, or loose, gas can leak out, causing a strong smell. Leaks in the fuel lines are particularly dangerous because they can lead to fire hazards.

- Fuel Tank - The gas tank itself can develop leaks due to corrosion, damage, or wear and tear. If the tank is leaking, you might notice the smell of gas, along with puddles of gasoline under your car.

- Fuel Injectors - Fuel injectors are responsible for spraying fuel into the engine’s cylinders. 

- Gas Cap - If you have a faulty gas cap it can allow fuel vapors to escape and that will also cause a fuel smell. 

Note - If you’ve recently filled up your tank and notice a gas smell, check to make sure the gas cap is securely tightened. If the cap is damaged, replacing it is a simple and inexpensive fix that can solve the problem.

- EVAP System - The EVAP system is designed to capture and recycle gas vapors from the fuel tank, preventing them from escaping into the atmosphere. If any one of these different parts fail then it could cause a fuel smell. An issue with the EVAP system can also cause your check engine light to come on. This can cause a runability issue and poor fuel mileage. 

- Fuel Injector Issues - fuel injectors spray gasoline into the engine’s cylinders. If an injector is damaged or its seal is worn out, gas can leak out, causing a strong smell, especially after driving. In some cases, a leaking fuel injector can also lead to poor engine performance and poor fuel mileage. An issue with your fuel injectors should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent engine damage. 

- Exhaust Leak - If you smell gas inside the car, particularly while driving, it could be due to exhaust fumes entering the cabin. This can happen if there’s a leak in the exhaust system or if the tailpipe is blocked. While exhaust fumes aren’t the same as raw gasoline, they can sometimes carry a gas-like smell. This can cause carbon monoxide poisoning - this is harmful and can be deadly. 

- Engine Running Rich - If your engine is running rich, it means that your engine is burning too much fuel. This can happen if the air-fuel mixture in the engine is off balance, often due to a faulty oxygen sensor, a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor, or problems with the fuel injectors. This will cause a drop in fuel mileage and for your vehicle to run poorly. .

Now the big question - What Should You Do If Your Car Smells Like Gas???

If you smell gas in or around your car, it’s important to take action right away: Things you can do before you need to make a phone call. 

1. Check the Gas Cap: Start by making sure your gas cap is securely tightened. 

2. Look for obvious leak: Look under your car for any signs of gasoline leaks, such as wet spots or puddles. If you find a leak, do not drive the car. 

3. Call us. Never ignore a fuel smell in your vehicle. It can be a serious issue. Addressing the issue quickly can prevent further damage and keep you safe on the road.
