Oil is vital

There are differing opinions on this. It started when manufacturers started to extend oil change intervals to bring the cost of ownership down. Yes the engine oil is better than it has been in the past and the additives that they use do protect your engine better than previously. The thing is though that with extending oil changes we are seeing more expensive repairs, more components that are failing prematurely due to dirty engine oil.
A good example of this is timing chains and camshaft phasers should not be failing at the rate they are and at the mileage. This is a direct correlation to an extended oil change interval. Both of these components rely on engine oil to operate properly. When that oil is dirty and contaminated then the engine oil does not lubricate properly. This causes the components to have a shorter lifespan.
We recommend that if your engine takes convention or blend engine oil that you have it serviced every 3,000 miles. If your engine takes full synthetic then every 5,000 miles. And if you are not driving much then they need to be serviced annually. If you're driving a diesel then the recommendation is every 5,000 miles.
