What does red fluid mean?

Red fluids in your car usually indicate a transmission or power steering issue. Don't panic, but definitely don't ignore it.

Several vital fluids in your car are red or reddish in color. Identifying the specific fluid is key to understanding the problem. Here are the most common culprits:

  • Transmission Fluid: This is probably the most common red fluid leak. Transmission fluid is essential for the proper operation of your automatic transmission. A leak can lead to serious transmission damage, which can be very expensive to repair. Transmission fluid is typically thin and slippery.
  • Power Steering Fluid: Power steering fluid helps you turn the steering wheel with ease. A leak can make steering difficult and potentially dangerous. Power steering fluid is usually lighter red than transmission fluid and has a slightly oily feel.
  • Coolant (Sometimes): While most coolants are green or orange, some manufacturers use red coolant. Coolant leaks can lead to engine overheating, which can cause catastrophic engine damage. Coolant usually has a sweet smell and a slightly watery consistency.

A red fluid leak is a warning sign that something is wrong with your car. By understanding the potential causes and taking prompt action, you can prevent further damage and keep your car running smoothly.
