It might not be what you think

A misfire can be from something relatively simple or it can be something more serious. If your check engine light is on then the first thing to do is to read the codes to know what the next steps should be. If you have codes for a misfire then naturally you would check the spark plugs for wear or damage. The white part of spark plugs is ceramic and they can crack or break, so even if you have new spark plugs it's still a good idea to inspect the spark plug that is causing the code to make sure it is not damaged.
If you have a fuel trim code then it could be a sensor and then we need to investigate other components. A faulty mass air flow sensor can feel like a misfire due to the fuel trims being out of specification.
