Why did my battery light come on? This depends on when the light came on. Did it come on before you started your engine? Did it come on while you were driving down the road? Did your engine suddenly die, and the light came on? Let’s say that it came on while you were driving. If you are driving and your light comes on it is an indication that your alternator is no longer properly functioning. It is your alternator’s job to charge your electrical system while your engine is running. When it stops doing that then you have a limited amount of time that your engine can run off your battery alone. If your battery light comes on turn off your radio, the heater or air-conditioner, the fan, and unplug any chargers that you have. This will give you a little time to get to a place where you can pull over and turn your vehicle off. With modern vehicles, it can damage the modules that run your vehicle if your battery fully dies. When the battery light on your instrument cluster comes on it means that something has gone wrong in your charging system.
