Your car could have overheated due to a lack of coolant/antifreeze. This can happen due to a hose bursting from age or damage. Your heater and radiator hoses should be replaced every 100K to 120K miles. If you think about it if you drive the national average which I believe is close to 15,000 per year is 6 1/2 years before you need to change them. That's a lot of driving in 6 1/2 years. When a hose bursts or leaks it will cause your engine to overheat, when this happens you need to pull over as soon as it's safe and shut off your engine. Driving while your engine is overheating will cause damage to your engine.
