If your car has these symptoms then it needs to be checked out. You could have an engine misfire and that is what caused the check engine light to come on. It would also explain the shaking and your car wanting to die. We would need to diagnose why the check engine light is on and what is causing the shaking. Typically if you have an exhaust leak in your engine compartment then it is from your exhaust manifold. Over time the bolts get weak and they can break. It could be your glow plugs that are causing the problem. They do wear out over a period of time and need to be replaced. Unfortunately they do not have a maintenance interval and so it is solely dependent on how they are functioning. After a period of time your headlights can become cloudy and hazy. This happens mostly from age. It can be remedied though without replacing your lenses. You car could be dying due to a faulty sensor that is used by your engine's computer to control the fuel and timing components. Your vehicle may be overheating due to low coolant from a coolant leak. Coolant is an important component in your car - just an important as fuel. Coolant keeps your engine at a proper temperature and prevents damage. Like all things car batteries do have life cycle and typically a good quality battery will last 5-6 years. That's a lot of starting, headlights, heating/air conditioning, and singing along to the radio. Your diesel engine may have had a block heater installed at the factory, if not then it's a good idea to have one installed if you live in cooler climates. It can help extend the life of many of your engine componets including the starting system.
