The same reason that you need to change your engine oil. Over time the fluid breaks down and stops protecting the transmission. This can cause your transmission to fail. How often is typically answered with a question of the type of vehicle you drive. How you drive and where you drive. That said, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine when it's time for a change. If you drive a manual transmission, it's generally recommended that you change your fluid every 30,000 miles or so. If you have an automatic transmission, the interval is usually a bit longer—somewhere between 30,000 to 60,000. Even if you fall within these ranges, there are other factors that can affect how often you need to change your fluid, including the way you drive and the conditions in which you drive. If you do a lot of stop-and-go driving you may need to change your fluid more often than someone who drives mostly on highways. Another consideration is if&nbs ... read more

If you're like most drivers, you probably don't think about your transmission fluid until there's a problem. And that's completely understandable—after all, it's not exactly something that's easy to check on a regular basis. But just because it's out of sight doesn't mean it can be ignored. In fact, if you don't change your transmission fluid when it needs to be changed, you could end up with some expensive repairs down the road. So when is the right time for a transmission fluid change? The answer, unfortunately, isn't a simple one. The frequency with which you need to change your transmission fluid will depend on a number of factors, including the type of vehicle you drive and the conditions in which you drive it. That said, there are some general guidelines that can help you determine when it's time for a change. This could be due to an issue with your parking pawl that is located inside your transmission. When you park on a hill and put your car into park your car will rock back or forward slightly and then it rests on the parking pawl. Over time this can damage your parking pawl and it will make it difficult to get your transmission out of park and into gear. When you park on an incline of any type while still in gear set your parking brake, let your car roll onto the brake then you should put your car into park. This will prevent damage to the parking pawl. Give us a call and let us take care of you. Happy Adventures, Heather

When your automatic transmission won't go into reverse it could be due to an internal issue within the transmission. This can range from an issue with your valve body to something breaking internally. The only way to know why is to remove the transmission pan and to inspect the internal components. It's story time - just humor me for a moment. I will start by saying this was prior to me working at the shop, at the time the boys were little and I was working from home. I should have known better, but I didn't. Jason and I took the boys to Seattle with his parents to watch a baseball game, on the way home we stopped for dinner as the boys were hungry. As we were getting ready to pull onto the on ramp suddenly we stopped moving. Nothing, nada, we weren't going anywhere. Jason with all his knowledge was able to get us off of the road and back down into a parking lot. Jason of course instantly knew what had happened. My transmission had gone out. From there he called the tow truck and we waited. We finally got home around 3 am and when he looked at my vehicle the next day, he found the transmission had imploded on it's self and it had to be rebuilt. Now had I known the signs and symptoms I could have prevented all of the anguish and headache and m ... read more

Your transmission fluid can burn due to friction in the gears and every time your transmission shifts heat is created with the clutches engage. Over time this can cause your transmission fluid to burn. Servicing your transmission on a regular schedule can prevent a catastrophic failure to your transmission and components. Your car may be shifting weird for multiple reasons. You could have a short within a module that controls how your transmission shifts and that could be causing the problem. To fix this it could just need reprogrammed and or updated or it may need replaced. It all depends on what exactly it's doing and when it happens. Give us a call and let us take care of you. The hard shift from park to reverse on an incline is to the the excessive weight of the vehicle on the parking pawl. This can be prevented by setting the parking brake prior to shifting into park. This should be done when ever you are parking on an incline or recline. If the vehicle continues to sit on parking pawl it can cause it to break. A good habit is to just set your parking brake prior to exiting your vehicle. Give us a call and let us take care of you. Happy Adventures, Heather
