The fluid in your front and rear differentials is a specific gear oil and should be changed every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. The range really depends on how heavy your vehicle is and if and/or how much you tow with your vehicle. The first service should be somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 miles. When the gears are new they give off more metal.
Servicing the fluids in your vehicle more often is never a bad thing. The fluid does break down over time and a fluid service is usually good insurance for the gear and drivetrain of your vehicle to last for years to come.
